Marie's Story
Life
After Holy Angels, I lived in R.I and finished high school. Got married out of high school and moved to Alaska. I have lived in Alaska 54 years and love it. Earned three degrees from the Univ. of Alaska, worked as a police officer for the City of Fairbanks for 10 yrs until an injury ended my career. Went back to school then changed careers to become a certified safety officer in Occupational Safety and Health. Worked as a contract employee for the Federal Aviation Administration as their safety officer where I travel around the State of Alaska inspecting FAA sites. Been married for 55 yrs (to the same person). For fun, I do lots of fishing in Prince William Sound. We have a 44 ft tri cabin trawler and fish for halibut, salmon and do some shrimping as well. We do Search and Rescue activities during the summer. During the w...Expand for more
inter months, I teach evening classes for Univ. of Alaska. I teach Intro to OSHA, Accident/Incident Investigation, Surface Mining, Intro to HAZMAT Management, ICS-200/300 and HAZWOPER. I fly home once or twice a year to visit friends and family in R.I but it has been some time since I have been back to N.J. I have a big house, and drive a Merc. Mountaineer. To end, I love life, live it to the fullest and I enjoy what I do! And I finally RETIRED!!!
School
Thinking back at school, I believe elementary school made the most impact. I remember most of my classmates from Holy Angels. Even though the old school is long gone, the memories are still very real.
Workplace
I worked for the FAA as a Safety Officer, travel around Alaska inspecting FAA facilities. Teach HAZMAT and Safety classes at the Univ. of Alaska in the evening. Been a faculty member for 15 yrs at the Univ. of Alaska. Love my job, it provides me the income to support my true love, fishing on my 44 ft trawler in Prince William Sound, in Valdez, Ak.
