Marijo's Story

Life My Spouse During my senior year at Ball State, I was introduced to my husband by a mutual friend and classmate. We dated for three months, got engaged on Valentine's Day, and were married in August 1965. After living in two other states, we again relocated to the Chicago area, where we lived for more than 20 years. But in August 2005, my husband, Harold "Bill" Gosselink, passed away. We had been married nearly 40 years. He had been in and out of the hospital for two weeks with pneumonia, anemia from injury to his spleen and congestive heart failure. He had had Type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years, and was insulin dependent. Later on Aug. 5, he was to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility, but he suffered a pulmonary embolism that morning. In 2007, I was very busy getting my three-bedroom townhouse here in Bolingbrook ready to put on the market. It needed a lot of work; now it looks really nice. Because of the market it did not sell, and I have put it on the market and taken it off again twice since then. I'm thinking of putting it on the market again sometime next spring. When it sells, I hope to move to Connecticut to be nearer my daughter and her family. My Pets My 14-year-old mostly white domestic female cat, Patches, is very loving and active. I seem to communicate well with her; I think she really understands English! Whether she chooses to obey me is another story. My Kids Son Garrett married Wesley Sanders in January 2003 in a lovely ceremony at one of Chicago's "Magnificent Mile" hotels. They live in the Chicago area. After 15 years as a sports broadcaster and in order to stay closer to home, he began another career in the insurance industry. He now works for a management-consulting firm. On Dec. 10, 2006, I became a grandmother for the first time! Parker John Gosselink is a great "little man"; on April 10, 2009 he was joined by his sister, Reed McAlister. In fall 2006, my daughter Karin started as a lecturer (instructor) in the English department at Yale University; two years ago she became assistant director of the writing center at Yale. She completed her dissertation in English literature at Rutgers University, where she had taught for two years. In October 2010, she married Philip Frick in Connecticut. They have one son, Will, who is 4, another son, Oscar, who is 2 -1/2, and a daughter, Nora, 8 months old. My Job After 9-1/2 years as a copy editor with a group of eight suburban newspapers, I quit to work part time for a well-known social science research organization. I worked at a local telephone production center, where I was an interviewer. Unfortunately, after nearly seven years working there and achieving top level interviewer status, I was "terminated" in June 2005. After another job which didn't work out, I am now retired completely. School All in all, high school was a great time for me. It's sometimes hard to realiz...Expand for more
e that's it's been 52 years since graduation. I really enjoyed my time working on the Owl staff; several years ago I managed to see an article on publications at WCHS to note that they've come a long way since we were there. As many of you might remember, I was managing editor for the Owl. I went on to use what I learned from Mrs. Sylvia Butler (She passed away in 2004), our sponsor, and other staff members, in my position as editor-in-chief for one edition of the Ball State News and my nearly 15-year career as a copy editor. I also had a great time working on "Charlie's Aunt," our senior class play, and I'd like to renew my acquaintances with castmates from those days. I'll always remember my senior English class with Mrs. McGuire and her help and concern for many of us. At the 40th reunion I learned that Bob Smith was able to give a eulogy representing all of her students. She was a great lady and will be missed. College In fall 1961, I was off to Ball State University to study to become a teacher. I pledged Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, and became an active member in 1962, later serving as vice president. We had many great times in the suite at Wood Hall. During the '80s I was active in the national organization, serving as National Parliamentarian. I also was active in the journalism department at BSU as copy editor, managing editor and edition editor of the Ball State News. Both those activites kept me pretty busy along with my classes. I received my bachelor of arts in education in 1965. Workplace I've had several jobs since college graduation. I taught Spanish, German and journalism at Oak Hill High School from 1965 to 1967. I've worked in a department store, as a copy editor and ad salesperson for a travel magazine in Pueblo, Colo., and as a substute teacher in Richmond, Ind. Most of my time in the past 20 years has been spent in journalism. I've been a copy editor for an outdoors publishing company where I edited articles on fishing, hunting and several horse magazines. For 9-1/2 yrs I worked as a copy editor and obituary writer for a group of eight suburban newspapers. There was always something interesting happening there, from editing editorials to editing news stories on hostage situations, murders and tornadoes! From December 1998 to June 2005 I worked as a telephone interviewer for NORC -- also known as the National Opinion Research Center -- at the University of Chicago. I worked at the Downers Grove telephone production center. I've done social science research studies on aging, childhood brain cancer, large medical groups, child health insurance and others. I briefly tried a couple of other jobs; nothing panned out. In 2007, I found a part-time job as a reader for a company that handles obituaries and guestbooks for newspapers. I telecommuted from home about 20 hours a week, but that job ended in October of that year. I'm now completely retired.
