Marilou's Story
I was on the 30-year education plan, attending Highline Community College after high school. After graduating with my AA in 1976, I "took a year off" to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I guess I decided I didn't really want to grow up, because I didn't go back to school for another 15 years. Instead, I married Mike Saunderson in 1977, whom I'd met at HCC. Together we had three great kids: Matthew (1981), Daniel (1983) and Katie (1985).
When Katie started first grade, I finally went back to school, at Seattle Pacific University. I graduated Magnum Cum Laude in 1995 with degrees in Family Services with a minor in Psychology and Apparel Design. No, they have nothing to do with each other, but it's further evidence I still didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up.
Ten years later, I went back to school, again, this time at the UW Tacoma, with a pretty clear goal: I was going to be a teacher! I'd worked as a para-educator in FW (K-6 and post high school emp...Expand for more
loyment and transitions, housed at FWHS) for 8 years and enjoyed it, so I figured this might be worth growing up for. Besides, I needed to be able to support myself since I saw the end of my 29 year marriage coming. Ironically, Mike and I are better friends now than we were when married.
I completed my elementary ed certificate in 2006, and have been subbing in the Renton district since. I would dearly love to have my own second or third grade class, but with the state-wide budget cuts to education, eliminating over 10,000 teaching positions over the past two years, I may have to re-think my options. So if anyone knows of any job openings. . . . look me up!
I currently live in Des Moines, about a mile from the marina. I'm getting reacquainted with my old stomping grounds, and enjoying many aspects of small town life. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, sewing and other traditionally female crafts, along with a growing interest in home repair projects as well as wood working.
