Marilyn's Story

Life My life has not turned out to be what I expected...but, it has been most interesting! I enjoy my chosen career as an accountant. I love having my own business. I have a grown daughter, who lives in Lethbridge, Alberta. We enjoy each other's company and are close friends (which is wonderful!). I have four grandchildren-Anna (born 1995), Riley (born 2006), Wyatt (born 2008) and the last addition Duncan (born 2012). I had always spent a fair amount of time in Lethbridge with my daughter and her family, and in March 2013 -.I moved to Lethbridge. I am absolutely loving being in a smaller centre with a population of around 90,000. As much as I enjoyed living in Calgary, I found it had become too large and busy for me. I have travelled a fair amount in my lifetime in Canada, United States, and abroad. I also lived in the Republic of Ireland for two years, and loved every moment. Part of that time was spent visiting various countries in Europe and learning so much from each new experience. I have been blessed with sincere and lasting friendships, which have sustained me through good and bad times. I consider myself very fortunate for all that I have achieved and all that I have experienced in my life to this point. I look forward to what is to come! School The school biography I am finding the most difficult to write. Some of the time I enjoyed being in school, along with the extra activities that I did. Sometimes I didn't feel as if I fit in - it seemed to be a struggle. Maybe that's part of growing up...I'm not sure. I think part of it was my lack of self confidence. I didn't believe enough in myself, and because of that couldn't possibly see what others would find interes...Expand for more
ting in me. And, so in the end, I found school a lot of hard work. But, I learned a lot and did okay. Later on I very much enjoyed meeting fellow students at the high school reunion held in the 80's. I had more confidence then, and it was great to get reacquainted. So...summing it up, school was an extremely valuable learning lesson for me...for both education and life purposes! College I remember feeling so intimidated when I started..a country girl from a small high school in a city university. It was a whole new start to my life, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences. Other than classes, the memory that comes to mind is trying to learn to play bridge in the student lounge between classes. I never did learn! I taught school for a couple of years in Manitoba, then moved to Alberta. While working, I returned to school at nights completing an accelerated accounting program at SAIT in Calgary. After passing the CMA entrance exam, I finished the Society of Management Accountants of Alberta two year professional program and earned my CMA designation. I currently put my education to good use as an accountant with my own business. Would love to know what other classmates did! Send e-mails. Workplace My career has led me in a couple of different directions. My first career was teaching at Dieppe School in Charleswood for a couple of years. After moving to Alberta, the direction switched to office work...first secretarial and then on to accounting. I worked for various companies, and then decided that I needed a change. I completed my CMA designation, and currently have my own accounting business, specializing in accounting for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
