Marilyn's Story

For the past few decades I have enjoyed researching my family's ancestry. Occasionally I lecture at the Center for Southwest Studies at the Community College nearby. Hope to install solar and wind power in the near future. Soon on the road again in my little RV to the various sites in the southwest. Love the fresh air and blue skies of the high dessert and wide open spaces. I always wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a lofty idea. As it turns out, they were right. When despair for the world grows in me and I waken in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water and where the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water, and I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. W Berry I hope to be remembered as a survivor of social and family discord. A person who belives in equity and justice for women and children, I hope there is hope for a future of political and religious reformation that will reflect these values. My heros are woman who excelled in spite of the suppression in our society: my pioneering grandmothers, Sarah Anthony, Margaret Mead, Hillary Clinton, and others of their strength and influence. I have lived in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and California. I took some of each culture to heart and totally rejected other aspects. The one person from my past I would enjoy seeing again is Shirley Olmstead because she saw talent in me and didn't give up in the effort to influence me to see positive in myself in spite of my bravado. Critters are an essential component in my feeling of well-being and because of housing and travel I was unable to have them in my life. My father, who was a hunter-trapper for US Fish & Wildlife, brought home rescued fawns, bear cubs, bobcats, horses, lambs. We always had dogs and c...Expand for more
ats as well. As a retiree I have become involved in animal rescues such as birds, dogs, and cats. My greatest surprise has been my academic achievement which was my M.O. to arrest substance abuse. Turned out to be a win-win. I have learned from my son and daughter that certain people lack parenting skills and should leave the child-bearing to those who have a natural tendancy to nurture children and place them at the center of the family's energy. If I won a million bucks I would establish a foundation for the education of women and children who have lacked opportunities to realize their full potential. I am happier than I have ever been in my life, living in fresh air and blue skies, enjoying my critters, anf raising tranquility. My first crush left me feeling abused and abandoned. This seems to be a common theme among men and women. We learn to little and too late that the sexes do not have the same goals and expecations. Hollywood is to blame for these false impressions, I suspect. My best friend would tell you that I am valient, however, those who don't take the time to know me well would describe me as violent. I opted to retire near the border because I enjoy the cultural diversity here. I relish the passionate Mexican style of music and music, bright colors, and sexy dressing style. I have always been a nudist at heart but prefer a solitary nudity rather than the exposition of a colony. Showing cleavage is greatly appreciated in this culture regardless of the age of the cleavageor. The weirdest part of being an X-Ray tech was giving Barium enemas. The weirdest person I ever worked for was just like my mother. If I had another chance to live my life I would have been born to parents who were good at it.In ten years I hope to be where I am and still in good health. My oldest friend was my cousin, Shirley Smith, who battled breast cancer for seven years and lost just a few months ago. She had an indominable spirit and made this world a better place with her laughter and joi de vive. I will honor her always for her courage and grace under fire.
