Marilyn's Story
Life
Hi all,
I graduated from a great Waltham High School.Next I went to Newton Wellesley Hospital to become an RN.After six months I left school and switched to IBM school in Boston.Worked in local Grover Cronin's business office in the IBM Dept. After six years there I left to marry a wonderful person in Sharon, Herb Gagnon, where we have made our home for 42 years, same house. We have three sons.First one and then unexpectedly one and a half years later we had identical twin sons. A wonderful experience and still is. They all live in surrounding towns and we are blessed with four grand children. After all this time we are about to sell our family home and relocate, hopefully nearby. These little ones grow so fast it is hard to believe the changes.Ages eight to three. Love it. Will update when we are moved. Marilyn (Raymond) Gagnon
Update as of 10/11/04
We finally moved after 43 years in the same home. We now live in West Wrentham,MA. in a very country setting. We are the oldest in this great neighborhood of younger families and like the lifestyle change very much. A bit far out which requires more driving to local things, but it is worth it to view the beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Miss my wildlife home which we sold to the Kendall Foundation which will preserve it for the critters that I enjoyed so much. It will not be built on.

Update July 15, 2009
I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
Finished the first six months to be capped, but then was distracted by someone special in my life at that time and left this career choice.
If I had concentrated, I would have made a good nurse as I really cared about the people I was studying for. It wasn't to be. Went in another direction of studies which was a great choice. I did not continue with my special person for personal reasons. It wasn't the person. He was great. My problem.
Correction, I never was capped. Left nursing just before the capping ceremony.
In the 80's, my husband, Herb, myself, and a few others started up the Sharon Historical Society. We were both very active as we shared the history of the town and wanted to preserve the facts for the future to have. He was President for several years and I was Treasurer for seven. The Society grew and after so many fund raisers, etc. we were able to have a building to store and show off the archives of the town's people. The town donated the land if we could raise the money for the building, which we did. The Society and building is thriving today.
Herb and I were amateur archaeologists and had many digs that we led. Our most famous was to find the site of the first cannon furnace for the American Revolution. It is all on record as we had the Boston University team, that we hired, do the lead work and document all that was found. The site is now in the Historical Places protected. Great memories. My digging days are over as I have much arthritis and other things that prevent the good old days of climbing down in deep holes, excavating layer by layer to sift and find the pieces of history.

I always wanted to be a figure skater when I grew up. My parents thought that was a risky idea. As it turns out, they were right..
While at the Ice Capades with my parents, I was about sixteen then, they announced that they were going to be interviewing people for the line skaters. I was ready to go backstage and sign up right then for tryouts. My skating a...Expand for more
bilities were good, but untrained. Only self taught and just loved the music to express myself on ice. Use to go into the Boston Skating Club on Thursday nights when everyone could skate. It was used most of the other times for the professionals and the lessons. It felt wonderful to skate over the ice to music with a partner that would ask me to skate when it was couples only. Mostly they were older men that also wanted a partner. I was good enough for that. If I could have done my earlier life differently, I would have taken figure skating lessons to see how far I could get. My parents did not have the money or time to get me there, so that ended that. Use to go into the Skating Club with Steve Hays, class of 1957 and close friend that had moved to Weston, Priscilla Colter, now Bodwell. She also went to the Waltham schools until the tenth grade, so I should get her to come online here.
Wished I could have taken tennis lessons also. When young and nimble, think I could have been good at it. Never have played tennis as the opportunity was not there or the money from my parents. We all probably have things that we wish we could have done and never got the chance. I was always very athletic and loved the school sports.
I think it was in the North Junior or High School that I played Volleyball with a great team. We played other towns and went by bus to get there. They nominated me to be the Captain and that was fine with me. I loved this sport and I see them today playing on the beaches in those skimpy bathing suits with all the sand. That must be tough.
Miss Sewell was our teacher for gym, so I think it was the High School. Anyone can tell me if I am right? My teachers are a bit vague to me now.
So if I had played tennis, travelled with the Ice Capades, played Volley Ball, I sure would have had a different life. Thought of becoming a gym teacher, but gave that up early after taking a tour of the school in Boston with an Alumni of the school.
That's it for now about my "what if's". Think I chat too much on here. Sorry if it gets boring.

November 28, 2009.
Just wrote a long story about the Whittemore School and my much older cousin that was a teacher there many years ago. One of the grades possibly third or fourth. Her name was Miss Gertrude Sanderson. Will have to continue it and my Thanksgiving story of long ago. The whole story just flew away and I have lost some character count as well. Do not know what happened. My Waltham history goes way back as the Sanderson's were the of the early settlers of Watertown and then called Waltham. Piety Corner area.

November 28, 2009.
Just found this tidbit of Waltham Nuttings on the Charles History.
From the Waltham Historical Society newsletter.
Do you have any info on the riot that took place
when the Casa Loma Orchestra appeared at Nuttings
for a one nighter that took place between
4/28/34 to 5/23/34. The newspaper that would
have carried it was The Boston Post. The obit. on
Si Shribman 6/3/46 might discuss it. In any case -it
was the first music riot in American popular history.
Thank you very much for your time and interest
Have never heard of this,
