Marina's Story

Life Hi Everyone....after living the life of an Air Force brat, a role which suited my gypsy spirit just fine, I moved back to the Sumter, SC area and spent the next 13 years there. Then I decided, time for big change and migrated north to Maryland and I absolutely love this area!! I was on the planning committee for two Hillcrest multi year reunions, one in 2002 and one in 2005. It was wonderful to see so many classmates again and even make some new friends in the process. The next one is tenatively planned for the fall of 2008. Hey friends, get in touch with me and come visit Washington; I'm a great ambassador! School As an Air Force brat, I did attend three different high schools: Aviano High School, Aviano, Italy; Hillcrest High School, Dalzell, SC and Lakenheath High School, Lakenheath, England. I loved all of them but I believe my heart is at Hillcrest as I was there almost three years. When I think about things like the crushes I had and the inspiring teachers, it's hard to focus on just a couple: I loved the boys; that's all there was to it but I was rather reserved in that arena, too, unlike the rest of my personality! At Hillcrest, I had some great teachers: Mrs. Williams for 11th grade English....what can I say? The lady was tough but we loved her for that. R. L. Williams for Geometry was a hoot! And who can forgot Mr. Campbell for History? I always thought he should run for president. I eventually graduated from Lakenheath and had a wonderful math/computer science teacher in Mr. McCarthy! Would I do high school all over again? I think not but not because the experience of it was not good...it was incredible. What I would prefer to do is put my energy towards getting so many of us from school back together again. I'm now working on the second multi-year r...Expand for more
eunion for Hillcrest; we had the last one in 2002 and will have another this year, Sept 30-Oct 2 in N. Myrtle Beach, SC. To all my friends from school: I miss you and I bet I've thought about each one of you over the years! To those of you that I have stayed in touch with: you've made my life richer because of that connection! College Loved life at USC Sumter from the first day and eventually went on to work there on campus with an international student program! Center of the campus was Glenda Fugate's office in the Student Activities Building...what great times we had from all the dances to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!" I miss my friends from those days and wonder where they are now? What about Renaissance Day? What about Charlie Boulware and all the activities that centered around his office? Remember the great teachers: Dr. Carolyn West, Jack Doyle, Don Curlovic, Porter Adams, Doug Darran....I know I'm missing some! Would love to hear from anyone from those days! Workplace Because I am single, work has so often been the center of my life...now, it's more like a good foundation that supports the rest of my life! I've had a multitude of jobs...some great and some not so great. My last two jobs have been in the Washington, DC area...one was with a national commercial real estate company in the appraisal department. I loved it...I especially loved being in downtown Washington, DC. It's so beautiful and energizing. My current job, the best to date, is with the Armed Forces DNA Identification Lab (AFDIL). Our mission is the forensic identification of fallen soldiers both from current wars through nuclear DNA and past wars (as far back as the Revolutionary War!) though mitochondrial DNA. It's fascinating...and the work is the most fulfilling of my life.
