Marion's Story

During my brief life in Mattoon, ILLINOIS, I was a senior transfer, from Marquette High School, Tulsa, OK. My freshman year was taken at Central Catholic HS in Billings, Montana. My nomadic school life began at Marquette first and second grades in Tulsa, OK. Then I was in grades 3rd through 7th at Blessed Sacrament in Denver, Colo. Grade school years were topped off at Holy Rosary 8th grade in Billings. After my freshman year, I returned to Tulsa for sophomore and junior years at Marquette HS. Once in Mattoon after reluctantly leaving Marquette, I was made to feel so welcome by Mattoon friends. The first one I met was classmate-to-be Margo Orndorff, a hospital nursing aide (?) who was assisting while I was being treated by a Dr Zinschlag (sp?). Nancy Wilson, God rest her soul, was another new friend who welcomed me warmly. In fact, she and I were roommates during the summer following our freshman years at different colleges. We attended a summer school under the auspices of Loyola University of the South, at Universidad Iberoamericano in Mexico City. One of our classmates was Spinner Zinschlag from Mattoon! We celebrated his B'day with Cake & accoutrement (Sp?) w/ leftovers😋! But I digress . . . back to Mattoon High and what I can recall, such as teachers, classes, supper clubs, the "Sexy Six + One (or maybe not?!), etc. However, my yearbooks, to which I might need to refer, have been packed away since 1999-2000, when we made plans to move from Tulsa to the Kansas City area. My late beloved Dad used to say, "I can't imagine anyone wishing to retire in Kansas City!" However, that's where all our GRANDS live, so why wouldn't Nana & Pop want to be there? Moreover, Dad was a Lawyer who transferred many times until he resigned in Houston,Texas. My Parents soon moved to a pleasant area on the Gulf Coast for many more enjoyable years! Meanwhile, my husband & I raised 4 lovely daughters. Two oldest never have married, but than...Expand for more
ks for our 5 Grands who are ranging from 1st College Grad now working on his own to the 2 youngest attending Visitation in KS City. One Grand is studying in Beautiful Firenze in Italy this semester ~ one of my all-time favorite places to visit. In fact, her Mom soon will fly w/an Aunt to visit the lucky student who has seen a a canonization already & met Pope Francis in Rome. Her younger bro is in his first year of HS. Their 2 cousins are in early grades, doing well. SO Pop & Nana are enjoying all the many activities, almost TOO many to number! UPDATE: At long last, we now live in Prairie Village, KS--part of the greater Kansas City Area on both sides of the MO River. Only two of our four daughters married, so we have a total of five grandchildren ranging in ages from 3rd & 4th ~ college is such a delight to have the three oldest about three minutes away in PV and the two youngest about 15-20 minutes away in KCMO. All have such busy schedules, but our two daughters make sure Pop & Nana see the GRANDS often! Call me prejudiced, but if only half the world's children had the kind of parents that these five children enjoy, the world would be a much better place! Their two aunts who live in Seattle & NYC are thrilled to find our family now consolidated in an area that has considerably cheaper airfares than those RoundTrips to Tulsa ever were. All right, I'll return later to attack more of those 16,000-some characters remaining . . . perhaps if/when we CELEBRATE our 50th Anniversary? It seems like yesterday we were planning the same for our respective parents. Mine went on to make it 65, while Darrel's observed 70 occasions! Don't you know our daughters wonder what family genes have in store for them? I'll try to add some more later . . . MRK Darrel & I did indeed make it to our 50th Wedding Anniversary on 8 September 2012. Our four Daughters surprised us with a truly wonderful party that also included our wedding party.
