Marisa's Story

School As far as growing up i used to live on the Southeast side of San Antonio and went to Kate Schenck elementary. If you went there then you probably knew my mom as well, Mrs.Rodriguez. She is a teacher assistant. Elementary was wonderful. Playtime, reading, mommy. The greatest time growing up with no worries. I still can probably name the kids in my class from kindergarten to 5th grade. Best teachers, maybe thats because i was teachers pet for all my classes.Best memories in elementary is probably all the great extra credit projects i did with my best friends Angela and Kaitlan. I guess you could call us nerds but i prefer eager to learn. I do remember being in my 1st grade play and having a lead part reading about pilgrims and Indians. So i wore my pretty white dress. Unfortunatly,it was enchilada day and i don't know how to eat with those cheap plastic utencils. You can guess what happened. I moved my 8th grade year to to the northeast side of San Antonio but finished my middle school years at Rogers Middle School. What I can remember about Rogers is that i thought i was so grown up and stupid at times. I stress the words "at times". I do remember all the great memories though. Like all the sports I played. In fact if i can remember correctly I played each and every sport. Classes were fun because there was no pressure of SAT's or getting a high GPA. Great times at Rogers. I just wish that i wouldn't of let someone write something profane on my hand to have Ms. Gately find out and call home. Or also wouldn't of ran off the time my best friend and i decided to leave campus during practice. And of course all those horrible dreaded regretable days when i wasn't allowed to wear makeup of anykind and had friends put that dark maroonish-brown cheap lipstick on my mouth. Never again. But all in all i met some great people in middle school. In fact the first person that i didn't know and was introduced to me turned out to be my best friend still to this day in middle school. You may know her too Erica Esquivel. In elementary we played softball together and hated each other but middle school became great friends, and to this day she is my best friend and sister. High School was a blast. I was the new girl at school and didn't really know anyone at all. So it was a change. Especially the diversity or should i say lack of. In many of my classes i think i was the only hispanic girl and thats hard to come by even though you l...Expand for more
ive in San Antonio. I was on the volleyball and softball team while attending Macarthur. Thats also when i fell in love with photography. I always liked photography but when i got the oppurtunity to develop my own film i found a hobby for life. Lots of football games and skipping class to go to Taco Cabana practically everyday. What can i say, when a teacher gives you a pass to go off campus to pick up film for the yearbook with no date or time on it you have to leave it in your car and use it as much as possible. Didn't have a real high school sweetheart. But went on my first date and other first dates as well. Wish i would of given the guys a little more chance and got to know them but all i knew was that i didn't want a boyfriend. I'm an independent person and even back then I had the mindset of "lets all stay single and just date". Got my first job at Paesanos where i hostessed. It was great i got to dress up everyday at work and met some really great older people who were in college. Towards the end of high school I just started hanging out with coworkers rather than friends from school. So that was different. Graduated in 2004. But failed a class. My first class ever failed. And you want to know what class it was----Film Critique. Thats right a class where all you do is watch movies and write reviews. I just wasn't ever in the mood to do such tideous work. Thats about it from schools. Now to colleges. College My first year of college i went all the way to University of Texas at El Paso. I followed my big brother there. I wasn't ready for a big university but wanted to move out of SA. After one year came here. This is my second year to attend The University Of Texas at Austin. I love Austin. It's a friendly town, not too far away from home and always something to do. I am a Social Work and Psychology Major. I always wanted to do something that was going to make a difference and as a Social Worker I can. I live in an apartment with 3 other girls. Two of them from San Antonio, one from the Valley. In fact, one of them also went to Rogers but we didn't find out until we were randomly assigned to live together. Her name is Deanna Palacios. I go to school and work two jobs one tutoring middle school students in all area subjects for their college preparation elective course and the other waiting tables at Joes Crab Shack. Soon i will be interning at the capital under the Attorney General for Outreach of Child support.
