Mark's Story
Life
2003 was a turning point in my life. I was riding my XR650R near Palm Springs when I nearly hit a car at a blind intersection traveling at 70 MPH. I don't remember crashing, but from reading the CHP report, I flew about 70 feet. I do remember that I blacked-out and had a near death experience. I woke up lying on the ground and I was bewildered as to where I was and what happened, at the same time I had a tremendous amount of pain. I had never felt that much pain in my life!
I was lying on the ground face down in the dirt and realized that I was wearing my dirt bike riding clothes. Then it came to me I was riding my bike and I must have crashed...I staggered to my feet saw my wrecked bike, looked around and saw no one. I stumbled to the other side of the dirt road and sat down with my back to the berm.
I was still in immense pain trying to piece it all together. At about this time my friend rode up and shortly thereafter the Paramedics, CHP and Ambulance arrived. I was examined and they decided to transport me to the hospital within 5 minutes. They placed me on a backboard and then gurney and away we went.
I was taken to Desert Regional Trauma Center. I had gone through multiple surgeries. I had ruptured my spleen and was bleeding to death internally. They removed my spleen, stopped my bleeding and gave me 4 blood transfusions. Two days later, I was back in the OR for surgery to my broken back. I had fractured my Thoracic vertebras T7-T9. They bolted my spine back together again. Luckily, the fractured bone did not severe the spinal cord! They placed me in a medically induced coma and gave me the "Morphine Drip." I was in a drug induced nightmare full of hallucinations. I woke-up 3 weeks later on the same-day they were getting ready to give me a tracheotomy. Luckily, I was able to breathe on my own again. I was on Life Support that whole time. Then they took me back to the OR to operate on my shattered left arm. My radius had to b...Expand for more
e broken again and rebuilt with plates and screws. I stayed in the ICU for a total of 5 weeks. I then went to a regular room for a week and then transported home to Corona.
I was home for less than a week before I was back in the hospital. Due to my being immobilized for so long, I developed blood clots in both my legs, commonly referred to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). I had an in-line filter placed in my Vena Cava to catch clots from my first hospital visit. If they did not place that filter in me, you would be reading my Obituary!! The Doctors put me on blood thinners and I was released after another week stay in the hospital. I now have to live on blood thinners.
I had to wear a full chest/back brace for six months while my spine healed. Needless to say I have been disabled from that date forward. I had to sell my home in Corona and forced to move back to Washington State (cheaper housing) since I am living on disability.
My wife Laura is the bread winner now. She is working for Alaska Airlines. We have a beautiful home, albeit we would rather still be living in California though. Life sucks being disabled, I fight depression all the time now. I yearn to be active again, but due to my accident, I have to live differently and I must now accept that. It is hard to live a "sedentary lifestyle" after being so active...
Well that sums up my last three years. I hope that I will get better, but I think I am as good as I am going to get. I am still adjusting to my new lifestyle. Hard to believe that after 27 years of dirt bike riding with only very few minor injuries that a major freak accident like this would occur. I broke my one of my Cardinal Rules of Dirt Bike riding "Always Attack the Trail." I was on Autopilot cruising being complacent thinking of work. That is when it happens, when you are not paying attention!! Whatever you are doing in life "Pay Attention" if not, trouble may come looking for you!!
Take care and may God Bless you!!!
