Mark's Story
Tried military service instead of college from high school, partly due to just wanting out of Missouri and partly due to being a bit rudderless after my dad's death, then after my 4 year stint it was time to move on. Military life didn't agree with me and wrecked my first marriage, I still regret that-- should have worked harder to try to save it, and I still miss her sometimes (my high school sweetheart - haven't seen her since 1986).
After the military, the recession of the mid-to-late 80's "helped" me bounce around jobs, I got remarried and went back to college at 25 - college worked out and the marriage didn't. A child came late and we tried to make it work again, had another baby but the marriage fell apart again soon after I graduated college. it through in decent shape.
Anyway, after getting my computer engineering degree I started over at age 30 and haven't regretted the 5 years of school then 3 more of graduate school it took. I've worked for some awesome software companies you may have heard of, and am both challenged and am good at my job. My third wife and I were both career people at the time I finished grad school and started my new career, so it was touch and go (and finally failed) without kids of our own living with us (how do you stay married for more than 7 or 8 years without kids?). Three strikes, I'm out, no more marriages for me.
So in 2006 I decided to co-parent a child with an ex-lover and very good friend (closer and more reliable than blood family) and we have a wonderful son we raise together (though we live separately). My relationship with her and our son has been the most rewarding and long-lasting of any I've had to this point.
