Mark's Story
To be brief, after leaving UHS in 1988 I purused a degree in piano performance here at the U of A, graduating in 1993. I had to take a reality check and decided against going into developing a piano studio and knew that I wasn't at the level where it made sense to pursue a higher degree, deciding to take a summer off to think through my options. I got a job working in a gift shop at Mt. Rainier, which ended up being 5 months in one of the most beautiful places in North America, with lots of time for getting deep into nature on my own. I visited Seattle a few times while I was up there and really felt drawn to see what I could do living in a new area. I loved Seattle but ended up hating my job at an insurance company. It was very expensive to live there, I had few friends there and was far from family. On top of that my job moved 60 miles south to a drearier corner of Washington. I decided it was time to return. While working part time as a freelance transcriber, I starting taking classes for personal interest and re-connected with my old love of languages. here and, more importantly, help me down the path to being able to read Don Quixote in the original. I became almost addicted to the language for a while and have not stopped learning. I am now an ABD (All But Dissertation) doctoral student here at the U of A, specializing in Medieval Spanish literature. I will be through with my degree the latest in December of 2009.
I have had the chance to take 2 trips to Spain, one to Italy, and just this past summer a final research trip to both Spain and Italy, since my dissertation topic is cross-cultural -- a nice excuse to get to see more of the world! The picture I uploaded here was from the end of this past summer's trip, the day I visited the Roman Forum for the first time, one day before taking my flight back to Tucson that landed on a shredded tire (!). You might notice my Notre Dame T-Shirt -- last summer (2007) I had the chance to be a student there in an intensive medieval Latin program, not something for the faint of heart!
I would be glad to hear from any of you from the UHS 88 or thereabouts class(es). One question I've been wondering about is if there was or will be some sort of 20th reunion?
