Mark's Story
Single with no children, I have lived in Dallas since the early 80's where I have worked many years for Stewart Title.
A major interest: travel...I have visited about 30 countries in Europe, the Middle East and South America. My favorite area of travel is the Mediterranean. Favorite places in my travels include the French Riviera, including Monaco, the Greek Islands (Corfu, Crete, Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Santorini), Italy (four times), the Costa del Sol (the lower southeast coast of Spain from Malaga to Gibraltar), the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Mallorca, etc.), Corsica, Sardinia, Malta, Cyprus, Lebanon, and just about anywhere I've been in the Mediterranean. I have also enjoyed visiting the magnificent monastery of Mont St. Michel on the Normandy coast of France, Paris (twice), Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Istanbul and Rio de Janiero.
One of my most rewarding trips was to Russia, where I experienced Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Golden Ring, an architecularly-rich area of towns ouside Moscow including Sergiev Posad, Rostov Veliky aka Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Kostromo, Vladimir and Suzdal. In Sergiev Posad, I visited the Monastery of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius, one of the most important sites in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Golden Ring is known for its numerous and beautiful onion-domed churches and I had the opportunity to visit many of those. In Moscow, I visited the well-known and much-photographed St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, as well as the many famous churches of the Kremlin. Another Moscow highlight was Lenin's tomb and viewing the founder of the Soviet Union in his glass coffin. In St. Petersburg, I visited the summer and winter palaces of the czars.
Other interesting destinations include Albania, Portugal, Gibraltar and it's famous and massive "rock", Morocco, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. Drove on the left side of the road in Malta and Cyprus. Caught on quick...you just have to keep thinking left at all times. Driving on the left side, though, always gives you the sick feeling that you're going to run into someone head-on on a curve.
Other memorable experiences in my travels include being in Philadelphia on July 4, 1976 for the official Bicentennial ceremony at Independence Hall. President Ford was the main speaker and Charlton Heston was Master of Ceremonies for the very moving program which I consider one of the great experiences of my life. Also, being at the D-Day beaches and the American cemetery in Normandy, France, burial place of our D-Day veterans, and arriving in London two days after the wedding of Charles and Diana, and seeing the city as it had been decorated for the occasion.
One of the best experiences in my European travels was taking the TGV, France's fast train, from Paris all the way to Nice on the French Riviera. The train reaches speeds up to about 170 MPH in open country, and is seen in the Tom Cruise movie Mission Impossible. The Paris to Nice route took us through such cities as Lyon, Avignon, Marseilles, Toulon and Cannes, as well as many different French landscapes before we reached the railhead at Nice.
One of my all-time best experiences while traveling in this country was walking across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco just before dusk. It was an exhilirating experience walking from north to south along the east sideof the bridge, being high above San Francisco Bay, and enjoying a great view of the city and bay area!
You never know who you'll run into in your travels: on the Costa del Sol in Spain in 2002, I walked off the elevator in my hotel and right into Dusty Martin of Leo Martin Chevrolet in Lake Jackson. He and his wife were visiting Spain with another couple and were staying in the same hotel with me. Small world!! It was also great to visit Kandy Shreves (B'Port Class of '72; she finished early with the Class of '71) at her home in Capri, Italy on my 2003 trip to Capri and the Amalfi Coast. On that trip, I stayed for about a week in the beautiful seaside town of Positano, seen in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, while checking out the scenic Amalfi Coast.
A very enjoyable experience recently (April, 2008) was meeting and talking with Charlize Theron when she was here for the AFI-Dallas Film Festival. She took a question from me and I talked with her during a question-answer session. Afterward I got to meet and speak with her. In her relatively short movie career (from the mid-90's), she has worked with an impressive list of actors including Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, James Spader, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Paxton, Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, Ben Affleck, Gary Sinise, James Caan, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Donald Sutherland, Geoffrey Rush, John Lithgow, Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Caine, Billy Bob Thornton, Patrick Swayze, Will Smith, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Hopper and John Corbett. Her many films include 2 Days in the Valley, Celebrity, The Devil's Advocate, The Astronaut's Wife, The Cider House Rules, Sweet November, Reindeer Games, Trapped, The Italian Job, Waking Up in Reno, Monster (won the Oscar for Best Actress), Head in the Clouds, Aeon Flux, North Country (nominated for Best Actress), The Burning Plain,Young Adult, and Prometheus. In Waking Up in Reno, she worked with two now-deceased stars: actress Natasha Richardson (The Parent Trap), who died after a skiing accident in March, 2009 and was the wife of actor Liam Neeson, and actor Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing), who lost his battle with cancer in September, 2009.

In the fall of 2008, being an avid fan of the Dallas TV series, I attended the show's 30th Anniversary party at Southfork. I joined a line of people waiting to greet the show's stars as they got out of their limos and got to speak with cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Steve Kanaly, Susan Howard, Ken Kercheval, Charlene Tilton, Mary Crosby, Audrey Landers and Sheree J. Wilson. (J.R., Bobby, Sue Ellen, Ray, Donna, Cliff, Lucy, Kristin, Afton and April)
In early 2009, I ...Expand for more
got to speak with music legends Art Garfunkel and Quincy Jones when they made appearances in Dallas. In addition to his fame as half of the most successful singing duo of all time, Garfunkel is also known for his 1971 movie Carnal Knowledge, in which he starred with Jack Nicholson, Candice Bergen and Ann-Margret. Mr. Jones' awesome run as composer/arranger/producer spans six decades, working with legends such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis, Jr., Herb Alpert, George Benson, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, to name a few. His significant other for several years in the 90's was actress Nastassja Kinski.
I also had the opportunity in early 2009 to meet and talk with movie director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, What's Up, Doc?, Paper Moon), when he was in Dallas for a screening of, and to talk about the making in Texas of, The Last Picture Show (1971). Among the many young unknowns he cast in the film was Cybill Shepherd, who became his girlfriend for several years and a well-known actress in movies and television. Bogdanovich would later direct legendary actress Audrey Hepburn in They All Laughed (1981) which turned out to be her last movie appearance in a lead role.
..
In December, 2009, I had the very enjoyable experience of meeting and speaking with Sarah Palin when she was in the Dallas area to sign her best-selling book Going Rogue. I also got to meet and speak with her husband, Todd, and her parents, Chuck and Sally Heath, who were traveling with her and also greeting those who came to the event.
Other brushes with fame include getting to meet and talk with Jaclyn Smith, Cindy Crawford, Lauren Bacall, Tony Bennett, and Walter Cronkite. I was ecstatic at meeting Ms. Smith, who remains gorgeous and of whom I am a long-time fan. She and daughter, Spencer Margaret Richmond, are one of my favorite mother/daughter combinations. Meeting Ms. Bacall blew me away...in addition to numerous well-known movies, she made four films with legendary actor husband Humphrey Bogart. After getting to meet and talk with Cindy and shake hands with her, I don't think I washed my hand the rest of the day. She looked fabulous, standing about 6 feet tall in a black sweater, short silver leather skirt, and black boots. Meeting Mr. Bennett was very enjoyable; he was very nice, personalized one of his albums for me, and appreciated me having played his music many times when I was an easy listening DJ in the 70's. His biggest hit was I Left My Heart in San Francisco, which won the Grammy as best single of 1962. While talking with Mr. Cronkite it was crossing my mind that in addition to anchoring coverage on many major events, such as the JFK assasination, he was hired at CBS by the legendary Edward R. Murrow, considered to be the father of television news. Also among noted journalists, I have met and spoken with George Will, Jim Lehrer and Cokie Roberts.
On a visit to New York City in the '70's, I had the chance to visit The Dick Cavett Show on a night when Bob Hope was the main guest. In those days, Cavett was Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show's main rival. On another visit to New York in the late 80's, my brother and I were walking down a street in Greenwich Village and saw that a crowd had gathered a short distance away. Checking it out, we walked up on Nicholas Cage filming a scene from one of his movies. We stood there and watched for about an hour as Cage did several takes of the same scene, obviously to satisfy a fussy director.
Being interested in politics and one who follows Congress, I value the experience of getting to talk with the late Senator John Tower on more than one occasion. Tower pulled a stunning upset in 1961, when, as a Republican, he won the special election to fill Lyndon Johnson's U. S. Senate seat when Johnson became JFK's Vice-President. At the time, Texas was still a Democratic stronghold, with Republicans holding very few elected offices in the state, and no statewide offices. Tower went on to serve Texas for 23 years in the Senate, retiring in 1984. I was privileged to attend the memorial service in Dallas for him and daughter, Marian, when they died in a plane crash in 1991. Among those present were President and Mrs. Bush (Sr.), Senators Bob Dole and Strom Thurmond, and Congressman Charles Wilson (Charlie Wilson's War). Also in the area of politics, I very much enjoyed getting to hear famed conservative William F. Buckley, Jr., when he spoke to a luncheon crowd in Dallas in the early 90's. Without question one of the most articulate individuals in recent memory. I could listen to him talk for hours!
Some other good memories for me include the many Friday nights working as public address announcer at Hopper Field for Exporter football games before moving to Dallas. Also, working in radio for several years in the 70's, including work as a weekend DJ for KXYZ in Houston. At the time, it was the major easy listening station in Houston. We had a great view from our penthouse studio atop the 16-story Fannin Bank Building at Main and Holcombe. Another enjoyable experience was membership in the Brazosport Rotary Club, where I got to fellowship with Dr. Tyler Baker, Bob Cunningham, Waiford English and Julian Taylor, the fathers of our classmates Linda Baker, Joan Cunningham, Lynette English and Bami Taylor. Also, Gene Marcum, Dr. Phillip Crow, Kenneth Wilson, L. Z. Bryan, Buster Curry, our classmate David Kesler, and many others. For many years, I enjoyed working with the club's student guest program and took many Brazosport High seniors to club meetings as student guests.
Celebrity crush: Jane Skinner, long-time Fox News Channel anchor and wife of NFL Commissoner Roger Goodell. She resigned from Fox in 2010 to spend more time with her family, which also includes twin daughters. Her many fans, including me, really miss her. A gorgeous, woman.
My best wishes are with everyone in the Class of '70. It would be great to hear from any of you at any time!
