Mark's Story

Since HS graduation, I attained my Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in June 1987. While pursuing my degree, I worked as a part-time drummer for country & classic rock bands around Bozeman playing at Little Johns, Stacy's, Willies, The Corner Club, Chico and surrounding towns (Livingston, Belgrade, Manhattan, Big Sky, Ennis). During the summers, I worked as a roofer for Quality Roofing often on jobs with my good friend, Darold Schnell. In June of 1987 I married Lisa Haaland from Shepherd, MT. I began my engineering career as a structural design engineer at the Boeing Company in Renton, WA. I discovered structural analysis was more in-line with my aspirations. In 1994 our son, Brandon, was born and we enjoyed watching him grow up with things like Little League Baseball, Grid Kids and HS football, Boy Scouts and earning his Eagle Scout. Brandon graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Outdoor Programming in Recreation, Parks and Tourism with an emphasis in Outdoor Adventure. Brandon is the co-owner of a white water rafting business in Winthrop, WA. In the winters Brandon teaches back-country avalanche education at Snoqualmie Pass, WA . Brandon recently earned his MBA from Eastern Washington University while working F/T as a financial analyst at REI HQ in Issaquah, WA. Brandon is recently married Bryn Mayo, currently a pilot for Delta airlines. In 1996 we moved t...Expand for more
o Yakima, WA so I could work at Dowty Aerospace as a Senior Structural Analyst. Two years later, we moved back to the Puget Sound region in Everett, WA to pursue the contract aerospace engineering life. We settled down and started working for Goodrich Landing Gear division in Everett, WA. In 2004 I became an independent consultant as a structural analysis engineer specializing in finite element analysis, classical structural analysis and fatigue analysis. We eventually moved back to Yakima and I started working for Triumph Actuation Systems (formerly GE Aviation Systems) as a Lead Structural Analyst / Aerospace Engineer. I left my job at Triumph to work remote as a contract Senior Structural Analyst on rocket engines for Blue Origin for one year. I transitioned to remote work on space ships for Virgin Galactic through March 2024. I am now retired. Lisa still works the wine industry. I occasionally play drums with local classic rock bands to keep my chops up. I've also become addicted to CrossFit and I recently qualified for and competed in the Legends CrossFit Master Finals in Tempe, AZ and also the Fittest of the Coast Championship (55+ men's team). We live about eight miles west of a small town in central Washington (Selah) and currently have two Labrador retrievers. We get back to Montana a several times per year to visit trying to keep up on maintenance of our second home in Missoula.
