Mark's Story
I grew up in Fresno and went to grammar school (George W. Turner School) and Junior high school (Kings Canyon Junior High School) until I was 12. Then I moved south 100 miles to Bakersfield. I finished Junior high School there (Washington Junior High School) and then graduated from Bakersfield High School (Go Drillers!).
Many of the kids I went to Turner school with later went on to graduate from either McLane High School (Go Highlanders!) or Roosevelt High School (Go Rough Riders!). After moving to Bakersfield, and finishing Junior High School, some of my friends from there went to East Bakersfield High School. (So I technically have an interest in the 1970 graduating class from four different high schools).
After graduating high school, I attended UC Berkeley and graduated with a B.S in EECS in Spring of 1975. I then went to work for Rolm Corporation (A telecommunications company in the San Francisco Bay Area). I also worked for IBM and Siemens (both via acquisition). After 25 years, I switched to working for Cisco Systems in San Jose doing software development.
I married Marge Markovich in 1979. We have a son, Rob, and a daughter, Katie (you can see Katie and Marge in my profile photo). Both are adults. No grandchildren yet, but Rob has just married his lovely wife, Victoria.
We have had some fun times as a family. When Rob was barely a toddler (actually about ...Expand for more
9 months). We took a road trip across the US (Literally from coast to coast and border to border). We put about 10,000 miles on that car.
One of the most rewarding things I have done in my life was to take 1 on 1 vacations with each of my adult children. Rob and I spent a month trekking through England scouting out possible universities for him to do his masters and possibly doctorate in English literature. We got around by train and stayed in youth hostels. I learned more from him about the history and culture of England than from all our tour guides combined.
A year or two later, Katie and I spent a week and a half on the East coast. We explored New York City and Washington D.C.
I highly recommend doing this if you have adult children. It is a very rewarding experience.
More recently Marge, Katie and I took a Mediterranean cruise that included a stop in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Marge's father's family came from Croatia, so this was very important to her. We also spent a lot of time in Venice, Italy. We would love to go back to Italy some time. On the same trip we also toured the ruins of Ephesus (now in Turkey). It was amazing to be walking the same streets that the apostle Paul walked.
Next year I am planning on going to South America for a week to trek the southern Chilean Andes in Patagonia (Torres Del Paine National Park). I'll let you know how that turns out...
