Marky's Story

LIFE: When I was a kid growing up I got in to glitter and gutter (junkie/shock) rock in '75, then I got into punk and new wave in '78 and started going to gigs in '80 (oh man, I'm dating myself - and rock stars aren't supposed to do that, now are they? Hahaha...). In 1980 I began singing and writing songs and lyrics, AND I STILL DO, under the alias "CAPTAIN ANARCHY" for the notorious old school "Spraypaint Heroes of Punk Rock" band from the Westside that's called H. x P. (pronounced "H P", the "x" is silent - it's a ghetto graffiti punk rock "homeboy" thang "Yo"!) that has played support slots over the years for major national touring punk rock headliners like Bad Religion and Social Distortion, etc., and has just released a 5 song EP co-produced by legendary drummer & producer Derek O'Brien of Social Distortion and Adolescents fame. I grew up in Culver City ("The Heart of Screenland"), smack dab between Venice/Santa Monica (aka "Dogtown") and Hollywood, CA. On the weeknights my teenage friends and I used to sneak out of the house to party with other punk rockers and some of the Suicidal Tendencies original band members and related Venice bands like Neighborhood Watch, No Mercy, etc. and the "Suicidal Cycos" homies at Mar Vista Park, which was the only cool place close to where we lived where punks hung out and partied. We ditched school a lot too and hung out there or at Venice Beach on the boardwalk or in S.M. at the mall and at the hip stores NaNa and Aardvarks. We also ditched school in the day or cruised up on the weekends in the day or night and hung out in Hollywood on Melrose Ave. and panhandled and partied in the alleys behind or in the stores (anyone remember Jim and his store Poseur ?). We also went to gigs and hung out afterwards at Oki Dogs, Motel Hell, Errol Flynn's, etc. with other punks and sometimes some of the heads from the L.A.D.S. (L.A. Death Squad), who gave me my nickname "Captain Anarchy" because I was a kid singer in a socio-political punk band that dressed like a punk rock Zorro, and members of H.R.P. (R.I.P. - Eric "Shooter" McVean) and various heads from the Dogpatch Winos and The Firm (anyone remember Tony? He used to watch out for us!). Some nights we used to squat at the Sarah Street house in North Hollywood and get rides to raid the McDonald's dumpsters for food in the morning from the homies from F.F.F. (Fight For Freedom). I ran away and lived at the house on and off for a while with Eric "Shooter" McVane of H.R.P. (Hollywood Rat Patrol) when my mom kicked me out for shaving my head, ditching school, staying out until 2am after gigs and coming home drunk (you know; the crazy things kids do...). I liked Sarah House and I liked staying there, it was fun and it was my first experience living away from home. Besides, we ate well every day thanks to the F.F.F. homies and we cranked the tunes, got drunk, smoked herb & clove cigarettes and did what we wanted. It's a bummer that those days are kind of a beer-goggled blur and hence I don't remember a lot of the people I knew back then and/or I have since lost touch with some of them since. I'm just talking here about various people and groups that I knew or hung out with when I was growing up, I ain't "from" anywhere, I just know a lot of different people. Most of my friends and I were never actually in any particular punk "gang", so don't be asking me where I'm "from", because the only place I'm "from" is The Kingdom of Heaven under the Command of God! We caught a lot of flack from some of the heads on all fronts because we lived between the "territories" and floated between them, but we also had a lot of friends on all sides, and we still do (so don't f%#k around fool...). I also now sing for the Scourge of the Seven Seas Medieval & Pirate Themed Dark Metal Minstrel Band DEVIL'S ALLEY (feat. Mick Wicked - aka Mitch Twersky of "Hated Principles" fame), the Infamous Junkie Rock/Punk Band THE HATE JUNKIES, Hollywood's Premier Motley Crue Tribute Band CHILDREN OF THE BEAST, and most notably the band that many of you have seen before, known as Hollywood's Heaviest, Nationally Televised, Critically Acclaimed Number One Underground Glam-Metal Band REVLON RED !!! SCHOOL: BIGGEST CRUSHES: Some of my biggest crushes were on Selena Woolery, Cindy Schiffris, Sandy Geisel, Yvette Teodorovich and Anna Winstein... and then there were the two girls that had a crush on me which were Carrie and Fawn.... all of whom I got to at least first base with... hehehe...... just to name a few.... but that's no big secret ! Just a few of the girls who got away were Dana Dennis, Jana Rajlich and Leisa Inman... hehehe.... none of which I ever really got very far or even anywhere period with from what I remember.... but that was a long time ago.... :-( And of course there was Buffy Gibbs... the girl that was the first true love of my life and my girlfriend for almost three years shortly after I graduated.... Then there was Christy Caldwell.... who was my girlfriend for a short while many years after school was out. Some of the girls that I dated and/or were my girlfriends while we were in school were punk rock girls that didn't actually go to C.C.H.S., but some of you may remember some of them... like Julie from Glendale, Anne from Hollywood, and most notably Lisa Murray who went to Westchester High School, graduated about three years before me, and used to work at the store NaNa in Santa Monica for many years with her best friend Lisa Riley.... Lisa Murray and I dated on and off about every ten years or so after that when we would come across each other again in life, and she was my actual girlfriend for almost four years up until just recently. These are just a few of the girls that I had a crush on in high school.... I'll add more names when I get a chance to really think about it... as it's been a long time, and there's been many, many, many girls that I've met, made out with, fooled around with, dated, lived with, and been in love with since then.... hehehe....... BEST/WORS...Expand for more
T TEACHERS: Well, there were a lot of teachers that I couldn't stand in high school, in fact most of them, and many of you remember how I was constantly arguing with them and getting kicked out of class and sent to the office because of it... and there were only a small handful that I actually liked... maybe I'll come back here later and drop some names, but for now lemme just say that if it wasn't for the super cool counselor Jerry Niesen and his special cure-all cookies that I probably would have been expelled right from the start !!! COLLEGE: Truth be told I actually took the California Proficiency Exam and bailed on C.C.H.S. in 1984 to go to West L.A. College with my then-friend Jim Watkins who graduated that year (a year ahead of me/us) because at the time we were half way to our black belts in Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Korean Five Animals Style Kung Fu and we were working on a couple of novels together, so we wanted to stick together. Also, quite frankly I was bored to death with high school... even the advanced college-level classes seemed like nothing more than a rerun of what I had already learned in junior high, except that I was expected to remember more minute details that seemed irrelevant... and they wanted me to learn advanced math, which was going to be worthless to me, and not my strong point, as I was a right-brained individual... hence I ditched a lot of classes... doing homework was a boring waste of time, hence I was failing a lot and was risking getting held back a year, so I took the test that proved that I knew everything that a senior needed to know to graduated and I bailed. Besides, the administration "had it out for me" because of my band and our foul-mouthed, subversive antics when we would perform at lunch time on campus... and because of the supporting anarchist literature that we distributed regularly around campus as well. I only spent one year at West L.A. College because there was not one person there that I could relate too, so I transferred to Santa Monica City College for my second year, where I was an A student in Voice, English, Creative Writing, Cinema and Philosophy and hence ended up on the Dean's Honor Roll. However, I never chose a major, because when it came down to it I decided that all I really wanted to do with my life was play music, which aside from a bunch of intermediary "day jobs" is exactly what I did, and which is what I do now exclusively. At S.M.C. I hung out primarily with Chris Hazard (the singer of FUNHOUSE), who got me from the '70's glam and late '70's / early '80's punk in to the '80's glam-metal and heavy metal and whom I still hang out with in Venice, Brian Perrera (who went to Westchester High) and used to sell bootleg band t-shirts, and is now the owner of Cleopatra Records and with whom I still hang out with occasionally in Hollywood, and a guy named Sean and his friend who myself and Jim used to study fencing with (we owned the class !) and with whom we would duel with fencing foils with when we would get drunk and stoned in the graveyard and the park after school while listening to early Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Cryptic Slaughter and other speed metal bands. WORKPLACE: In case you haven't heard... I'm a rock star..... duh.... hehehe........ Although I will admit that before I pursued music as my sole career at first I ran a few cars in to the ground working for every messenger service (and hit on every office girl) in Beverly Hills and Century City for years right after high school in order to finance my nightly escapades.... which aside from hitting the clubs and dating tons of chicks of course also included song writing and rehearsing.... and for extra cash I delivered pizzas for the greatest pizza joint in town called Damiano's Mr. Pizza, where I worked with other rockers and a cool manager that let us eat as much as we wanted for free, drink beer on the house and get high while we were on duty, flirt with the hot waitresses and hang out with the stand up comics that performed there and have our band's play gigs in the restaurant all the time. Then I moved up to working for graphics companies that payed way more and let me drive their company trucks. From there I worked for the Auto Club of So. Cal. (AAA) and made decent money in the Emergency Road Service office, where I was trained ny the best in professional customer service and crisis handling skills. Later I worked various customer service jobs, both full time and for temp services, and eventually worked in the business ad department at The Recycler, which led to me making fat cash as the senior photographer in charge of the Auto Buys department where I set my own hours and was able to spend a lot of time playing music, writing as a senior staff writer for Rock City News, producing and hosting a cable access t.v. show called "L.A.'s Underground - Featuring Captain Anarchy", and of course... dating girls and hanging out on the beach at Venice and El Porto, where I still hang out and boogey board, ride my tricked-out customized cruiser and chopper style bikes and my vintage Bones Skateboard on the strand, and eat and party at Sharkeez. Now I have government grants for music and the arts and I make money being a rock star that sings and writes songs in five different style bands and performs locally and on tours, releases albums, videos, performs in commercials, licenses songs for movies and compilations, books gigs as a freelance agent for national acts from the '80's that are still popular and doing well, and produces other bands and such... and for fun I still hang out at concerts, gigs, dance clubs and themed events like the Rennaissance Faire and such, and I travel semi-frequently... and date hot rocker chicks. MILITARY: Now why the F%#k would I want to join the ridiculous friggin' military ? I'M AN ANARCHIST !!! However, I do quite frequently like to watch the Hitler Channel... ooops, I mean the History Channel.... especially the program called "Wings of the Luftwaffe".... hehehe.
