Mark's Story

Life Three high schools and three universities has left my school years scattered around the country. I started high school at Penn-Trafford High, PA. I did two years at Murray High School, KY and left there about two-thirds the way through my senior year and finished at Fairhope High, AL. My father's job changes were the driver for this and I don't regret it much. Each change led to new opportunities to remake myself a bit and try to leave behind the pains of teenage high school life. All things being equal, I would've liked to graduate Murray but Fairhope had its southern charms (and my first real teenage romance that'll always be special despite my stupidity during that time. {Hi Michelle, hope to hear from you someday}). I graduated from Fairhope High School (AL) in 1983 and started college at the University of South Alabama. I transferred after two years to later graduate Auburn Univ in '88 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I spent some time getting a graduate degree and left Georgia Tech in '89 to go to work for the phone company in Kansas. (Wow. 10 years summed up just like that.) I have been working as a corporate computer geek running high-end computing systems for most of my career. I've been in the Denver area the last 11 years managing large database systems for various employers. I just missed the profitable part of the internet bubble so I'm stuck with having to work everyday. Married twice, divorced twice (sigh). The second divorce was just completed in late July '07. No kids from the first marriage but three in the second. I got a bit of a late start at this so all the kids are elementary school age. Two boys and a girl and all have their individual sparks and quirks. I'm just restarting this post-divorce life again with everything I had right out of college (except the three kids part). arter-million miles on it, I'm living in an apartment, and have no money in the bank (the second ex-wife was a compulsive spender, the first was just an egocentric control freak). Overall, I'm looking forward to the future. I'm still working out how to be a single man when I've spent the last 12 years exclusively as father and husband. Trying to be the best father I can to my children is probably going to be the biggest challenge. Everything else is just a matter of paying off all the creditors, organizing my life, and learning how to date again. Goals? Not many - live life daily, focus on the positive, seek God, be a good provider, and raise my children well. I'm not ambitious in the way that I must have the latest Porsche (although the new Cayenne Turbo is pretty sweet). -Mark (Aug '07) It's been year - thought I'd update. I got married again, three months ago, to a woman who seems to be perfect, perfect, perfect for me. We met way back in Dec '06, got engaged Nov '07, and, somehow, the planned "long engagement" got shortened to a wedding in late April. We've moved together into a house (we did the traditional thing and lived apart until wedded), and have half-time custody of my children. It's hard to be a half-time dad but so much more rewarding that having the children every-other-weekend. She's being a good step-mother to my children and we're still trying to find the right balance there. My job has gotten, ummm, interesting, I guess. My company has just been bought by a competitor and we're all waiting to see where the axes will slash. We've got some reasonable guarantees right now so playing wait-and-see is decently safe. The 17-year old truck was traded for a, God-help-me, minivan. They're ugly & un-cool but they're practical. They're the last stop on the I-used-to-be-cooler-than-this slide but I was never that cool anyway. -Mark (07/29/2008)
