Mark's Story
Life
Although as an adult I've lived in places as varied as London, southern California, and Africa, for the past four years I've lived in the house my parents bought when we moved to Ohio in 1972. It happened to be on the market and I more or less impulsively decided to buy it. Not the smartest financial move I ever made, but I like living here. I'm divorced but in a committed relationship, and have two dogs. I volunteer at a local animal shelter.
School
I probably skipped as many classes in high school as I attended. Consequently one of my proudest achievements, in a perverse sort of way, was my induction into the Westerville South High School Hall of Fame in the spring of 2000. (Yep, there really is such a thing.)
College
I went to Ohio State on the five-year plan (back in the days before the five-year plan became fashionable). I majored...Expand for more
in history and beer. After receiving my BA in 1982, I took a couple of years off, then lived a year in London. While there I got my MA in War Studies at Kings College London. After another couple of years in splendid poverty, I started my PhD at Ohio State in 1987. Graduated in 1992 and joined the history department as a tenure-track professor.
Military
I enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1983. Did my Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Served in the 136th Field Artillery Battalion as a Forward Observer. Rose to the rank of Sergeant. Never deployed, just went year after year to beautiful, exotic Camp Grayling, Michigan. Got out in 1991. Because I'm a military historian, I continue to have a lot of interaction with the armed forces, and a number of my best friends are career officers.
