Mark's Story
After high school I attended the University of Florida (GO GATORS!!) for undergraduate and law school, graduating from UF Law in 1985. As a loyal double gator, I rarely miss a UF home football game. I was also awarded my LL.M. degree in Judicial Studies from Duke University Law School in May 2016.
After law school I came back to WPB to practice and later became a shareholder of Sonneborn Rutter Cooney & Klingensmith PA, a trial practice firm defending medical and professional malpractice lawsuits. In 2008 I was elected as a Sewall's Point Town Commissioner, was Vice Mayor in 2009, and Mayor in 2010.
On June 17, 2011, I was appointed by Governor Rick Scott to be a Circuit Court Judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit beginning July 18, 2011, and was assigned to hear cases in St. Lucie County. On June 27, 2013, Go...Expand for more
vernor Scott elevated me to Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal, with jurisdiction over appeals from the 17th Circuit (Broward), the 15th Circuit (Palm Beach) and the 19th Circuit Courts (Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee). I took my seat on the appellate court on August 12, 2013. In 2024 I was elected to a one-year term as President of the Florida Conference of District Court of Appeal Judges, and I served as the Chief Judge of the Fourth District Court of Appeal from 2022-2025..
My wife Wendy is also a UF law grad (1991) and was a Magistrate for the 19th Judicial Circuit from October 2012 to October 2015. We have two great kids, Hope and John. Hope is a Foreign Service Officer for the State Department in Washington DC. John is an Eagle Scout, and works for Atlantic Aviation in Stuart.
