Mark's Story
Life
It just doesn't seem that long ago that I lived in Indy. But I've been away since 1989. In 1982, right after HS graduation, I thought "So this is supposed to be a big deal? and then got upset like I missed out. I bet I wasn't the only one. And I really doubt I missed out on anything. I attended IUPUI and went into teaching. I hoped to land a job in Indy, but it just didn't happen. Jaro (John Jarosinski--BD teacher/coach) told me "Mark, you just have to get that first year under your belt and then the jobs open up."
Well, Jaro was right. I did get that first teaching job at a place called North Newton Jr/Sr. High School, a rural community way up in NW Indiana. My first couple of years were rough. They went on a state record strike 20 days into my first year. Year two had me getting let go (AKA fired)at NN for the "greater good" of high school basketball. The system decided to bring in a new basketball coach & as part of the to the guy they hired, his wife was offered a teaching position---mine. valuations. I thought of going to grad school, but decided to give teaching a little longer when I landed a job with Lake Central Schools, a great community near Chicago. I'm glad stayed with teaching, but I never made it back to Indy.
Every now and then I run into someone from my past and get a "Whatever happened to you? You vanished" type of thing. Well, happily for me, I didn't vanish. I enjoy the area I now call home and teach a great system. I now live in Merrillville, Indiana (it'Âs near Chicago). I'm at Kahler Middle School (Lake Central School Corp).
My personal life includes a 21 year old daughter, 2 dogs, & a 10 year old divorce. Divorce---now that is a scary word. If you're going through one, it isn't that bad once the storm is done. But the key is to get through it and move on. My ex & even became pretty good friends for 3 years until she passed away (cancer--Oct. 2006).
Feel free to drop me a line anytime; someplace on this site there is a message link. It would be nice just to get a "hello" with some people with Ben Davis ties.
