Mark's Story

Upon graduating from Warren High School in 1988, I was off to Ft. Jackson, SC for Army Basic Training. It wasn't easy by any means, but I managed to make it through unscathed and proceeded to Ft. Gordon, GA for a year of Satellite Communications training. I polished my test taking skills, but didn't really learn how to do my job until I got to my first assignment, which happened to be Ft. Ritchie, Maryland. It was in Maryland that my eyes were opened to how great military life could be and I made up my mind early on that I was staying in for the long haul. I made a lot of friends in the surrounding area(Hagerstown and Fredericksburg, MD) and definitely plan on going back to visit some of them once I'm out of the service. After three years in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I was off again, this time to Seoul, South Korea. I spent most of my time working, taking college classes, playing intramural sports and helping a Korean friend of mine teach English to some of the locals. The latter hobby had its benefits too (i.e. free lunches, tours, etc.) so I can't say my time was all charitable (lol). After a year and half in Korea, I flew back to Ft. Gordon for another 16-week course in preparation for a follow-on assignment to Landstuhl, Germany. The assignment itself was a turning point in my career since it dealt with equipment and technologies that were way above my head and caused me to rethink my life's priorities a little. I was still going to school in my free time, but I hadn't put forth my best effort in learning all the things I needed to succeed long-term in the military. I did what I had to, but little else. I really had to buckle down to learn this particular vocation, and took full advantage of the opportunity it presented. From there it was back to Ft. Gordon, GA where I was assigned to the 235th Signal Company, a tactical satellite communications outfit with some of the...Expand for more
sharpest men and woman in uniform. It was from here that I deployed to the desert with some 50-60 other troops and spent a year of fun in the sun as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I'll never forget the day we landed and missile alarms were going off all over the place. It was quite an awakening to the reality of the situation, but fortunately we all made it back in one piece and my thoughts will always be with those still over there as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon my return to Ft. Gordon I was soon moving on to my previous assignment at the Defense Information Systems Agency Pacific located on the island of Oahu. I don't think I need to expound too much on what kind of assignment Hawaii turned out to be. The mission there allowed me to increase my knowledge base beyond satellite communications, which could prove rather helpful when I retire from the military in a few years. The island is as beautiful as you could imagine and I learned how to scuba dive and surf during my time there. Surfing has become more of a passion than a hobby and I look forward to returning to the beaches once I retire from the military if not sooner. From there it was on to Fort Riley, Kansas where I'm attending Transition Team training whose mission it is to train & advise the Iraq/Afghanistan Armies & Police Forces. Unfortunately, I was unable to deploy from Kansas and ended up moving on to Wiesbaden, Germany where I'm currently stationed. As soon as the Division gets back I will be taking over as the 1SG for a signal company here and will probably deploy one more time with them before I am able to retire. It's hard to believe I've been in the military over 20 years now but I've experienced a lot of different cultures and will be always be grateful for the opportunities that military service has afforded me. Most importantly, I will never forget the friends I have made along the way.
