Mark's Story
Life
As most of you have heard BY NOW, I am gay and out and "married" to a man. "Married" being a loving, life-time, committed relationship (since 1990). I know that all sounds shocking, but the most shocking part of all is that I AM THE VERY SAME PERSON YOU KNEW IN HIGH SCHOOL.
But, I AM MORE HONEST with myself and others. I no longer have to lie about or deny my attraction to men.
Workplace
After my bout as a professional student at Clemson for 6 YEARS...
I returned to my hometown of Loris, and began searching in Myrtle Beach for any opportunities in Computer Science - only to find there were absolutely NONE (at that time).
I finally decided to just do something temporary, and so looked to the Hotel/Motel industry for which there was an abundance of jobs in Myrtle Beach.
I started at a small motel named the Fountainbleau Inn just a block or so from the Pavilion Amusement Park, and gained some great general experience in the hospitality field, as well as used my computer skills to help automate some of the hotels day-to-day tasks.
After only one summer and fall I moved on to a larger opportunity at the Palace Resort at 16th Ave S in Myrtle Beach.
There I started in reservations, quickly moved up to Front Desk (PM-Check/Outs, then AM-Check/Ins), then Overnight Auditing; Desk Clerk, and then Front Office Manager. The two years were ...Expand for more
great experience in the condominium-hotel business. Then, due to a poignant disagreement with another manager, I chose to leave abruptly one day.
I took a temporary position with Blockbuster video, and after only a few months, a friend that knew of my work at the Palace Resort pointed me to a new opportunity with the company where I still remain since 1992 - LITUS* To Let.
They had a new computer system for condominium rental management, to which they were having a very rough transistion. So while being their reservationist and being a desk clerk as needed, I helped them sift through the old systems, explored the new systems, and over the next couple of years helped them restructure their entire vacation rental program.
It was a perfect niche for my new skills and my college degree. I have since helped them manage a growing computer network and kept them up-to-date with new software and hardware -- since things have progressed very quickly with computers during my time with them.
Besides these computer/techincal aspects, I have also become the office manager and the corporate comptroller for A/R and A/P.
The company is a tight-knit group of team-players with a family mentality. Everyone pitches in, things are very flexible, and the employees are loyal and hard-working.
The job has been a great blessing, and I am thankful every day.
