Mark's Story
I joined the Navy after High School,picked the hardest subject they had to offer(Nuclear Power Program) for the challenge.The next couple of years were bumpy in my personal life, said some things to some people that I wished I hadn't( they know who they are ).I am asking for forgiveness. Strangely though it wasn't even accurate. Stranger still all of this set in motion a series of events that ultimately led me to my wife to be. The Lord blessed me with my beautiful wife and we have been together ever since(28 years). We have three children and youngest just gave birth to my first grandson!The Lord has put all things in focus, while the trials are still hard his Word sees me through.Professionally I am the Mechanic for a full service yacht repair facility in Arnold,Maryland( been there 17 years).Dr. Gerard Baruch( Chemistry teacher at Lackey) said in 1976 to me," if you want to change the world, build a better battery". He couldn't have been more right. Since my interest is with Electric Cars I have to reply," Doc.I'm working on it". "A CAR STORY" I owned my first car when I was 19 years old(1978), it was a newly repainted royal blue,1964 2-door,Cadillac Coupe deVille with white leather bucket seats. I bought it from my parents on the the way to my next duty station at the Naval Nuclear Power school in Orlando, Florida.The weather in Florida is unpredictable. One moment very sunny the next pouring down raining. The heat was such that you needed to keep the windows down a bit to vent the hot air out. Problem was it would also let the rain in. Solution, invent a system that would sense the rain and close the windows. As a side benefit the system was modified to also turn on the headlights and wipers when the car was running. Also giving an auto feature to put the windows up without holding the buttons(a feature found on cars today). The system worked great! With the sensor easily reachable from the outside of the car you could wet your finger, touch the sensor and "UP" comes the windows, it got your attention. The next interesting modification stemmed from "rude" drivers riding behind you with their high beams on. This particular car had the gas tank fill cap behind the rear license plate. The tag would hinge down exposing the gas cap. Step 1 was to motorize the mechanism thus allowing me to raise and lower the tag at will(James Bond like).Step 2 was to install a one million candlepower quartz floodlight, it was mounted on a rod and rested on the gas cap. The light would slide into the bumper to give access for refueling. As you probably guessed a quick flick of the light switch produced a beam a thousand foot long, you can imagine the results. Your probably wondering about leaving ones car windows down while the vehicle was unattended. Hey, it was 1978, thieves were more interested in stealing your gas than your car. However I built an alarm system that modified the CB radio's( you know you had one too!) PA system. Once the alarm was tripped it turned on the the hand held mike,the outside speaker and this is key, an inside speaker. What you got was the most annoying feedback squeal you have ever heard. It was then amplified to 120 decibals on both speakers(in and out). Better yet the doors would relock, the windows would go up and you could not open the doors or windows without shutting down the alarm with a switch. The effect was inspiring( especially if you were stuck inside ).The trunk, hood, doors, tag and motion would trip the alarm, and to my knowledge the car was not violated.In addition to the...Expand for more
above modifiations, the car had dual batteries, so you never had a dead battery to ruin your morning commute. It also sported a custom built-in tachometer to monitor the modified 500 horsepower 7000 rpm limited motor(the long air conditioner belt would come off above 7 grand).For a big car with fins, it was very fast. The dual exhaust sounded great.There are alot more stories I could share(ask anyone who's owned and built a street driven supercharged muscle car and they will tell you that the car takes on a life of its own) but I need to move on, this story is going somewhere. I put 180 thousand miles on the car in 5 years and it was recycled. By this time I was already starting my family and the available fuel quality was such that it would not support the performance level of this engine( high test leaded fuel was disappearing). The next phase of cars I went through involved taking small "grocery getter" cars and putting in large GM V-8 engines. The problem is that the car is not balanced, I mean the car is too heavy in the front, the braking is marginal, the handling is poor and the biggest problem is the lack of frontal area to support the airflow through the radiator needed to keep the engine from overheating. So you end up with a car that spins the tires, can't corner,can't stop and overheats. But hey, it sounds good and turns heads. Tired of the drill I set out to design a car that would out accelerate a Corvette and out corner a Porche. It was 1989 and I was running the machine shop for the Chesapeake Bay Institute. We provided and maintained a research vessel that traveled the bay for the purpose of scientific studies.I had access to all the equipment and lived next door to boot. I started with a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird( by all accounts a grocery getter). Installed was a 400 hp 350 Chevy without supercharging. Oversized 4 wheel disc brakes grafted in from a Monte Carlo. An oversized radiator,a full frame with an adjustable 3-link suspension. Dual 3" exhaust to the rear and the crowning achievement a custom built electrically driven supercharger(10 years before I ever saw one in a magazine). Nice huh,not quite. The year is 2000 and the only thing done in the last year was installing two 1/2" stainless steel fuel lines. This car was intended to go 180 MPH. It never moved on its own power in 11 years and was started bimonthly for an half an hour to keep things lubricated. There was no way the Lord was going to allow me to have a car who's only purpose was to break the law. It weighed heavily on my heart even to own it. What I really wanted to do was to design and build an electric car. I had some experience with an electric 3-wheeled recumbent 2-seater bicycle with pedaling also to run and pedaling to recharge the battery. It also incorporated a flywheel to store momentum. It worked great and I drove it around Edgewater in 82 and 83.In 2000 my brother, knowing I wanted to build an electric car, gave me a 92 Geo Metro hatchback( with a blown up motor).The stage is set,the gas car had to go. That week at church bible study I gave a testimonial about giving up the other car and expressed my desire to build an electric car. One of the other members spoke up and said that he had just purchased an electric forklift at a gov't auction for 100 dollars and all he wanted was the forks to attach to his backhoe and put hay in his barn. He said you can have anything else you want. I removed the motor and controller and got rid of the other car. Since then I have built 2 electric cars and try not to exceed the speed limit.
