Mark Mitchell:  

After leaving GDHS in 1973 I spent 6 years at U of T and obtained a BSc and MSc in chemistry. I joined Alpha Delta Phi in my second year and lived in "Animal House". Actually, while we all loved the good times, everyone there was bright, capable and focused and balanced lots of hard work in with the party times. Graduate school was a great time too. I worked in a world class research lab for a prof who is now in Chicago and several other graduate students, some of whom are professors themselves now. After the MSc, I worked in industry for 3 years at Borden Chemical in the east end of Toronto. I worked on a number of projects, including enhanced oil recovery and even managed to be a co-inventor on a Candian and US patent for that work. Meeting with the US patent lawyers confirmed my desire to return to University, this time at Law School. I went to Law School starting in 1982 at UWO in London. I came back to Toronto after graduation and articled at Lang Michener. I've been here ever since and am now a partner in the Intellectual Property group. I specialize in patent litigation and work mainly in the chemical/pharmaceutical area. I was married in 1983 to Esther and we had 2 children, Kylie, now 24 and Greg, 20. Esther worked for Uof T in the Chemistry Dept as a Sr. Tutor. Tragically, Esther was taken from us in January 2004 by cancer. Kylie left Queen's where she was a first year student that year, but has persevered and graduated last June with her BA. In spring 2009 she was accepted into Teacher's College at York U and will start in the Fall. She has a great husband and a wonderful son, Ben. Yes, I'm a grandfather!! Much too young, but there you are. Greg just finished Police Foundations at Durham College. Unlike his short old man, Greg had some height genes and is a strapping 6 footer. He's hoping to apply to a police force sometime in the next few years after getting a little work experience in security. I remarried in 2006 to a wonderful woman, Karen. She has a daughter, Heather who is 27 and works for CTV in the technical part of the news department. I like to collect fine red wine. Austalian, Argentinian and Californian are favourites, but I have some French and Italian wines too. Karen got me into golf about 4 years ago. I'm not terribly good, but I do love it. I've had a cottage on Halls Lake since 1998. Looking forward to opening it again soon, but May '09 is proving to be fairly cool and wet, so we might wait until early June this year.
