Mark's Story
Life
After highschool I went to Elizabethtown College and graduated with a BA in History/Law and a minors in Philosophy/Art.
At the end of college I took a sort of right turn and ended up in Seminary rather than law school. College was a great time of pilgrimage for me and the call of faith and its community was very loud.
From there it was off to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary with a year at Harvard Div to study the Ancient Near East. While in grad school I met my wife, a Hebrew student, in of all places, a Hebrew Language class.
We lived in the Boston area until 2000 and then headed to Santa Cruz California, her home town, to work and search for Jobs. At the end of that year i was invited to become one of the pastors at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church on Grosse Ile Michigan. (It's a small island in the Detroit River just as it opens up to lake Erie.
Now I work and she has returned to school for another M.A. (this one in education) at U. Mich Ann Arbor. Let's Go Blue!
Update: Moved to New Jersey in May 2005 to become head of staff of the Presbyterian Church of Pleasantville NJ.
Send me an email if you get the chance! I'd love to re connect with country dayers and etowners alike.
School
I look back on Country Day with great nostalgia. I often wish that I could go back and do it again knowing what I know now but still, the memories are fond. you know, all the good stuff, first love, loss of innocense, great games and championships, parties and the feeling of imortality.
I remember Mr. Smedly, Smeds and Model UN. It was Smeds who taught me that history is a living thing and...Expand for more
also the value of understanding history and people from a social perspective and not simply reducing things to dates and events removed from the reality of life. It was that understanding that gave me direction for my major course of study in college.
I also remember that we were tight knit. With only 36 kids in the class how could you not be? Even with our social cliques there was still a sense of over all belonging that I think many folks in larger schools missed out on.
Looking back I wish I would have kept in touch with more folks from back then.
College
College was a true peregrenatio from arrogance and ignorance to some sort of humility. I remember vividly Chris Roscoe and the first few years and him eventually deciding that I was ok even though I did a good job of pissing him off. But what can you say, we were the 3North MungDogs and I think we were the last of the great Brinser floors.
i remember the last year and a half of college very well and the advent of my understanding of faith and social responsability. even though I couldn't disagree with him more on issues of theology I give great credit to Prof. Clemons for opening the door of that kind of thought to me.
You know, the wierd thing is, I have a better relationship with my advisor, (Dr. Winpenny) now than I had then. Go figure.
Hey, if you're out there let me know. Yes you.
And then it was on to Grad School and Gordon-Conwell. Man I wish they would let you write different stuff for different schools.
Seminary was amazing but of course how could it not be in New England near the water?
