Mark's Story

Life After finishing high school, two years at the University of Rochester, and a stint in the Air Force, I took some time off and then graduated from a hospital-based, diploma nursing School in Pennsylvania. Eventually I went back to school for a B.S.N. and after a nearly twenty year career as a practicing R.N. went to law school at the University of San Diego. I spent seventeen summers as a Boy Scout camp nurse, twenty five years as a volunteer scout leader, and I still do volunteer work with the scouts as a merit badge counselor. I spent twenty years doing amateur and semi-professional theater until the pressures of work made that impossible. From law schoo I went to the U.S. Department of Justice in D.C. as a special litigator in the Civil Rights Division and later transferred to what was then called the Land and Natural Resources Division as Special Assistant to the head of the Division. I also worked with the Vice President's Task Force on Regulatory Relief and wrote an executive order for then President Reagan on constitutional issues. After leaving DOJ I worked for a while as a partner in the San Franscisco office of ...Expand for more
a Chicago-based law firm and eventually left to do non-profit work on constitutional issues. Now, and for more than 15 years I have been in solo practice so I can concentrate on almost exclusively constitutional matters and just last year added a separate public policy consulting business, consulting on constitutional, environmental and related public policy matters, still living in Boise, Idaho. I am also a Research Fellow with the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy, headquartered in San Francisco, where I wrote Grand Theft and Petit Larceny: Property Rights in America, an international award-winning book on property rights. I have three children, two sons, ages 46 years (which is not allowed) and 20 years, and a daughter age 21, of whom I am very proud. Oh yes, and two great dogs, Juno and Bella add life and spice to our home. My hobby is still astronomy and I finally achieved my dream of having a small (one might say . . . ahem . . . mini) observatory in my back yard which houses a twelve inch schmidt-cassegrain telescope which has fascinated my daughter no end. Who knows, maybe another budding amateur astronomer!
