Mark's Story
If you want to read what I've been up to lately, just scroll down!
I'm still me, just older. After RMHS, moved to NYC (where I still reside) went to college at NYU. I've been in the New York real estate business since 1985, and along with my brother John, opened our first office in 1988. Today, we are Preston New York Spare time these days are spent with the Amateur Comedy Club, which is the longest continually running amateur theater company in the country (since 1884). We produce three major plays a year, as well as Special Projects (which I chaired for the 2006-2007 season). It has allowed me to finally get back to my creative roots, where I can produce, write and direct shows. Still single, would still like to marry and have kids (I know at 46 it should be time already, but what the hey, I'm really enjoying my life!) Proud also to have been helpful with class get togethers, where I was able to rekindle old friendships and create some new ones, but now I have passed that torch!
THEATER UPDATE 08/12/2007. I am pleased to announce my secnd radio play for my theater club. This past December we presented "It's a Wonderful Life", which I produced and directed, for two performances and it was well received. I have just been asked to present "A Christmas Carol" this December for three performances, and I will once again serve as director and co-producer .
THEATER UPDATE 02/17/08. Christmas was quite a success. I ended up producing a second show in December, a fundraiser in NJ called "A Christmas Special", which was a music and variety show and it was a blast, and featured a wonderful cast of singers, and performers including a ballroom dancing couple! In January, I produced what is probably my final production for my theater company, "A Night of Cole Porter". It was a great show with great voices and was directed by a good friend of mine. I am now shifting my focus to working on my own performing career. I am currently in rehearsals for a jazz and blues show featuring myself and several musician friends of mine. We are doing some great stuff and the show is scheduled to take place at a Manhattan venue. When the details are worked out, I will post them. I decided I wanted to get back to my first love, making music, and underneath all the other things I've done, I"m a rock and roll guy! The show is a reflection of my influences, from the Who, to CCR, to Ray Charles, among others. It promises to be a great show, and for those who've seen other things I've done, this is completely different!
UPDATE 2/20/08 - My new show will take place on Sunday, May 5th, in Manhattan. Negotiating with several venues, and will announce it shortly. The show now has a title - "If It Has a Back Beat You Can Blues It", and a subtitle - "It's a Bluesy, Jazzy, Rock and Rollish Kinda Thing". We've got a solid show of ten numbers, including "She's Not There", "Georgia on My Mind", "Behind Blue Eyes", and an original number, "Happy Man Blues". As the show gets closer some of the numbers will start appearing on "You Tube" and "My Space".
UPDATE 4/17/08 My music show is now being pushed back to mid-August due to a creative influx! What started from writing one original number, has now evolved into a dozen original songs, and therefore the focus of the show has changed. My music collaborator and I have come up with some really wonderful material, so much so that the plan is now to get an album out by the end of the year - but that starts by getting interest, through the web, word of mouth as well as the upcoming show. We're sticking to the original plan of releasing music on YT and MS, but the plan has now expanded to include the launching of a music website, PrestonsBeat, which will be up in about a month. We've started recording the original material on video, which will be on the website as well as YT and MS. The classic covers we were working on will also be recorded as MP3s and will appear on the site. I've put together a terrific, innovative t creative team, which includes my accompianist, a project manager who is an entertainment veteran, and a web designer who has a great track record in country and rock. The numbers for the album itself, titled "Second Chances", are a mix of ballads, bl...Expand for more
ues, and rock numbers, and are reflective of my strongest influences, which are found in 60's and 70's artists, ranging from CSNY, all the British groups (particularly the Beatles and the Zombies), John Fogerty/CCR, Jim Croce, and two of the coolest guys, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash (not to forget Elvis either!). JC inspired the one country number titled "I'm Just an Outlaw (in my head). Once the site is up, my blogs will appear there. Classmates isn't the best place to blog, but right now it's my ONLY place to blog! I look forward to updating everyone soon. Until then, Love and Peace, Mark

Well, you know what they say about keeping it simple! The music website has been delayed, but the music is moving along nicely. I'm performing Wednesday, July 16, at a performance space in Astoria. It's a great venue to try out new material, and I will be debuting two new songs that night, and then play there every 3 or 4 weeks, premiering two new songs at some. It is less pressure then doing a full show off the bat, plus I really need to see what works and what doesn't. I found planning something bigger too soon, plus taking on marketing and other aspects was hindering the creative process. When I decided to back into music, I wanted to have fun with it. So I have taken it back to basics. I'll do a more formal show when I feel everything is ready, and that in all likelihood will be later this year or early next year. But I'm really excited - I have 12 songs that are a nice mix of blues, ballads, and folk. And I've kept it simple!

Excited about the 30 year! It's going to be great. Park Ridge Marriott is a nice place, it's a nice time of the year, and the ballroom has a large outside terrace. I really think this is going to be our last big one, and everybody has plenty of time to make plans, so go! Hope to see everybody there!

I reached a new milestone Tuesday night with my first public performance of original material and I am happy to report it was a nice success. When people ask you after a performance about getting a CD, that's a good thing! I will be making my next appearance Tuesday, August 19 at the Waltz-Astoria in Astoria, Queens. As for the CD, I'm hoping to have it complete by the end of the year. Before that, some of the tracks will appear on my music website, which is now slated to launch in early October (we'll see!).
IF you have interest in attending, let me know!

New gig added! I'm going on the road. I will be performing north of the border on Sept. 1, appearing at the Free Times Cafe in downtown Toronto (eh!).
Sept. 12, 2008
Things keep rolling along. The two gigs in Toronto went very well, although the web broadcast didn't get off on time! Had a great show back in Astoria this week (Toronto really rubbed off on me), and will be back there at the end of the month. I'll begin the album around mid-October, and the website should also be up the same month! In the meantime, I have a You Tube channel with a few videos ( /markpnyc) and some of my best work is still yet to be posted, and that will start happening next week. Also, I will be returning to play in Toronto sometime in October. And as if I'm not busy enough, I've been asked to direct "Miracle on 34th Street - the Radio Play" for the ACC this December (I will also be writing the adaptation).
Dec. 19, 2008
Haven't posted here in quite awhile. I'm in the midst of my run of "Miracle on 34th Street". It's been well received and have a few more performances. Haven't performed musically in several weeks to due a combination of being sick and working on the play. I'll be back on stage in a few weeks. I am now playing fairly often at Paddy Reilly's in Manhattan on Wednesday evenings. Best way to get my updates is to go on Facebook - you'll see a lot of alumni there too!
Music selection for the CD is complete and I will be in the studio in January (it was to be sooner but then I got involved in writing this play).
Feb. 2009. You can now find my blog at myspace(dot)com/marknelsonpreston. Features include my music and my newsletter, Preston's Beat. It's all under my blog! You'll also find me and alot of our classmates on Facebook, and it's free!
