Mark's Story
Life
It's been a long way from Decatur - 1962. I moved to Chicago in 1963 after a year at the U of I in Urbana. I got involved in 'Data Processing' in Chicago in the mid 60's. I went to Chicago City Colleges at night and worked as a programmer during the day. Raced sports cars & rode my motorcycle during the Summers around the MidWest. In retrospect, this was my retirement... it was a good one!!
In 1971 I worked at the Univ. of Ill Circle Campus in an attempt to finish a degree but was hired by the Univ. System of Florida in 1972 and moved to Miami. I was on the founding staff of the the Southeast Regional Data Center located at Fla. Int'l Univ. where I finally got a Bachelors and Masters degrees. I moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in 1975 as the Manager of the Administrative 'Data Processing' department. Later I was on the founding staff of the oil company (Aramco) Exploration, Petroleum Engineering Center (EXPEC), in the Mid 1980s I was the Manger of Data Base Administration at Saudia Airlines & then became the head of Data Administration at the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO)... one thing just led to another... I've been in the Middle East ever since.
I was the founder and GM of Algosaibi Information Systems from 1994 until the end of 2004 when I resigned to form 'Business Process Management Middle East' (BPM-ME) a software distributor focused on the emerging Business Process Management market sector. As I was just a bit ahead of the market curve, I closed BPM-ME and started Business Process Management Saudi Arabia (BPM-KSA) as a consulting organization. In 2008 I took a contract ...Expand for more
with USAID to advise the Iraqi Ministry of Oil on developing a modern IT infrastructure.
As of mid 2009 I've been with the Ministry of Oil in Baghdad for a year and a half. The work is very good, the situation is "interesting". I was named to the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, IT Steering Committee by Ministerial order in March of 2009. In Nov 09, we received approval from the Oil Minister, H.E. Shahristani, to form the IT Planing Executive Committee. My work is expanding now to include the Ministry of Electricity.
I have 2 older kids, Jon now 33, lives in Bahrain and is a Producer with Orbit TV. Rose is 30 working for the State of Arizona in Tucson and going to University of Phoenix. The younger Zack was born May 12,2001 and Maya was born January 23,2003. I married to a lovely Saudi lady, Khadija and also have a Saudi step daughter Fatima who just graduated from Medical School.
My Mom & Dad moved to Saudi 7 yrs ago, Dad was quite ill and died a couple of months after the move. Mom is doing well and lives across the street from us in the compound in Al-Khobar.
The best description is, "..still crazy and having fun" !! I'm happy to hear from anyone. Conatact me 'meragel' I'm at yahoo
Rose got married last Oct.(2008)to a nice fellow from Mich and Jon looks like a marriage candidate later this year (2009) with a very nice Taiwanese lady.
My youngest Maya is in 1st grade and her brother, Zack, is in 2nd grade at the Dhahran Academy. My step daughter Fatima graduated as an MD from King Fiasal University Medical school in Dammam, Saudi Arabia (March 2009) and is now an intern.
