MARK's Story

Life I now live in Farmville, North Carolinawith my wife, Linda Adele Goodine (our daughter is back from NZ and applying to school In Montreal. We live in an old Williamsburg housewhich we are renovating. I retired from teaching after 34 years at the Herron School of Art and M now managing a few properties that we own. My wife took a job at Eastern Carolina University as a distinguished Belk Professor.15 years ago we did some research in New Zealand and England. It was a whirlwind tour but was a great experience for the whole family. I think the best part of this was renting a car and touring the north and south islands for 2 months. 10 summers ago we took a group of students to Greece. Two days in Athens then on to Paros for three weeks, with a short side trip to Santorini. It was great! I met up with a couple who have been producing ceramic products for the past thirty years on Paros. We visited the quarry where the Venus De Milo was mined. This was a quarry that was in existence in the third century BC. Part of my experience was to video tape the events. 9 years ago I was asked to visit Eldoret, Kenya to assist a crafts workshop that employes...Expand for more
recovering AIDS patients. 4 years ago we hosted one of the founders of the workshop, Njoki. She was here for four weeks (staying with various people). We organized several workshops to train her in craft techniques like printmaking, papermaking, bookbinding, and glass beads. It was an exhausting process but she got a good dose of American energy! We try to get back to Greenfield every summer to see my family. Several summers ago it was a working holiday as we painted my mom's house. I miss the back roads and fresh running water. One of my favorite drives is along Green River Road to the ten mile bridge and then through Leyden (we used to ride this on our bikes as kids). We are adjusting to the south and having trees flower in January! I look forward to getting back to Greenfield more often. When I get really homesick I go to Google earth and travel, via mouse, up Leyden Rd, past Beaver Meadow Cemetery to points north. I enjoyed the 41st high school reunion a several years ago and am sure that I didn't get to speak with as many classmates as I should have. i’m Looking forward to the 50th. Hope Life has been as good to you as it has to me!
