Mark's Story
For those of you at BHS, you knew me as Mark W. Smith. I changed our name in 1997 back to my original family name from 1871 when my great-great-grandfather came to America from Prussia. It is pronounced Tri-der.
Robin, my one and only wife, is from N.C.; I met her while at Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., and we've been married since 1989. Michael was born in 1990. While we wanted more children, Michael remains an only child. Robin is involved in the Church, and can often be found playing tennis. Michael loves baseball, paintballs and girls although not necessarily in that order and is an A/B student at high school.
I graduated from PSU (4 years main campus) with a B.S. in accounting and after a short stint as an accountant (very boring), I joined the Air Force where I flew Fighters (very exciting). I saw the world from Korea, the Philippines, Hawaii, Canada, Germany, Spain, Turkey and east coast to west in the good ole USA. While some of it was from flying fast and low, I also scuba dived in the South China Sea, and the Atlantic. I ended up teaching the young kids how to fly the bent wing Phantom II ...Expand for more
in the high desert of California.
After 8 years in the military, I got out and was hired by two airlines and chose American Airlines (not quite as exciting, but now I get free coffee). I have flown the 727 as a Flight Engineer and First Officer, or what you would call co-pilot, both domestically and internationally through the Caribbean, Central and Northern South America. Since 1995 I have flown the DC-9, 80 series domestically from Mexico to Canada and coast to coast. In 2000, I upgraded to Captain at American Airlines on the Super 80 out of Washington D.C. In 2014, I switched over to the newer Boeing 737-800.
At 65, the FAA has a mandatory retirement for Part 121 (Airline) pilots, and I've enjoyed waking up in my own bed every day since 2021, having lived a good third of my last 32 years in hotel rooms. I spend my days doing at least one thing a day, which more often than not multiplies into two or three. My favorite thing to do is visit my 3 granddaughters who live just 1/2 a mile away in the same neighborhood, currently in Jan '24 aged 8, 4, and 2. The youngest two are a hoot.
