Mark's Story

I graduated from Hinsdale South in 1969 and in 1972 I married Connie Marsh. As she has stated so well, we were both young at the time, and sadly the marriage ended. After reading her story, I openly admit that I'm proud of what she has accomplished in her life. I did remarry in 1977 to Carol Kral and we lived in Evergreen Park. As for myself, being the 70's, it was a time that I sought employment in various opportunities that were related to the civil engineering field. However, as some of us remember all to well, the economy took a real down turn and many of us found ourselves unemployed. That being said, I found both myself and my Carol moving to Texas in 1981, and as former Governor Connelly said, "Texas was the only place where a man could get a second chance in life". The Texas Department of Transportation offered me a fine career that lasted 28 years and allowed me to experience some of lives greatest opportunities. Some of these included working with FEMA following Hurricane Alicia, designing the rehabilitation of Houston's Southwest Freeway and Houston's portion of IH-10, helping establish Texas Amber Alert Team, Archeological Assistant at the restoration of Freedman's Cemetery, assisting Katrina evacuees, representing TxDOT at the Texas State Fair and The Fort Worth Stock Show. Like Connie, I soon realized the value of having an education. So during my time at TxDOT, I attended Tarrant County Junior College and received an Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science. Following that I attended Texas Wesleyan University and received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with an emphasis on Law and Religion. I also became a member of Pi Gamma Mu, International Social Science Honor Society and made the Honors List in1997, 1998 and 1999. Following in my families footsteps, during my time at TxDOT and school, I became active in Texas politics. Having worked with the Libertarian and Republican Parties while in school, I finally found a home in the Texas Democratic Party on a Local, State, and Federal level. I have worked for various c...Expand for more
andidates in the capacity of staff member, adviser, compliance officer, and campaign manager. Some of the individuals I have been associated with are the Honorable Sergio L. DeLeon, now a sitting judge in Fort Worth and Tarrant County adviser to the Clinton Campaign in 1992, State Representative Lon Burnam, Ms. Wendy Davis in races for City Council, State Senate, and now the 2014 Democratic Candidate for Texas Governor, and Mrs. Cathy Hirt's Campaign for Fort Worth Mayor in1999 and 2011. However, being, shall we say, up there in years, I now limit my political activities. But I still believe in "don't vote, don't complain", be you a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, we live in a country that allows all to exercise the right to vote. During my time at TxDOT I lived in Houston, Odessa, Arlington, and finally bought a home in Fort Worth's TCU local. My home is typical of the homes surrounding TCU, built in 1940, true brick, and I've been told by more than one knowledgeable individual that my home is a Sears Roebuck Home. Just in case your interested, Carol and I separated in 1987, but she lives close by and we have remained friends. My other interests include my friends back home in the Chicago area, the Chicago Bears, the White Sox, and Illinois politics. My music tastes includes anything but 'Gangsta Rap & New Country'. Books I like include Political Interests and religion. Movies I like include To Kill A Mockingbird, My Fair Lady, White Heat, A Day at The Races, plus many others. TV shows include the likes of West Wing, Law and Order, Monk, and Twilight Zone. For those who remember, I had a passion for Ford Mustangs, well, I traded off my 2006 Shelby modified for a 2014 GT. Some people thought I was nuts, but to quote the Godfather, they "made me an offer I couldn't refuse". So 'baby' sits in the garage while I drive my Toyota RAV4, unless the weather says....'take me out'. Someday she'll see those I know up north, but not right now. By the way, yes it's true, we have highways with 85 MPH posted limits and roads that seem to go on forever. ' '
