Mark's Story
Although I graduated from Berkeley High, I grew up in Livermore, attending school there: Fifth Street, Joe Mitchell, Mendenhall, Granada High, and had friends at Livermore High, too. My folks moved to Berkeley in 1969. I graduated in 1971.
I remarried a few years ago, and Karen and I enjoy climbing, car camping, backpacking, a little skiing (when there's snow) the Sierras in general. I surf about once a week at Linda Mar beach, in Pacifica, CA. I really love California.
I have two kids, son and daughter, both grown-ups now, and we're close. My folks, married 65 years, live a few blocks away from me. My dad was head pastor at First Presbyterian in Livermore.
I was a carpenter for 35 years, building houses in the East Bay Hills, now mostly retired, though I do have a nice shop, which I enjoy. My big love has always been reading: fict...Expand for more
ion, history, poetry. I wrote a book of poems ten years ago, which got a small but positive review in the New York Times. I'm still writing.
My family lived on South Q Street, just off Fourth, which was an older part of Livermore, even then. Some of the things I remember: Playing in the seasonal creek bed areas just outside town. The old Library. Foster's Freeze on First. Boot Hill. A newsstand near First and Livermore where we'd check out Playboy magazine. Ed Brush teaching Shakespeare at GH. A&W Drive-in. Railroad tracks to Pleasanton, and the Pleasanton Fair. The seven sisters and the terrible car crashes there. Altamount. Playing baseball in Kelly's Lot. Delivering the Herald and News in Joesville. The bowling alley. The two lane country road to Livermore (580) from Castro Valley--when we first moved there.
