Mark's Story
Military
From boot camp to my only duty assignment, what can I say. I liked boot camp so much that I got to go through it twice (no, it was not by choice either).
I joined the army in July 1991 so that I could get money to finish my college education. I picked a powerful weapon system to work on. How powerful you ask? Let's just say that one round could take out a football stadium.
From my advanced graduating class, I was the only person sent overseas. I got to go to Germany for what was supposed to be for less than two years, but ended up being almost 3 years. I renlisted for 2 more years, with the intention of going to Officer Candidate School (OCS). It was a good plan until I read the regulations for myself. I decided then and there that I would finish my active duty obligation and go back to school. And for those of you who didn't believe me when I said I was going back to school, I got my degree on May 13, 1998.
Germany was a unique experience in itself. I met a German family through the Christmas visitation program between the military and local communities. I developed a strong friendship with this family, with whom I still correspond with to this day. I met both of their fathers who were P.O.W's during World War II. There were no bad feelings from them what so ever. One of them took me on a tour of Nuermburg during my return trip to Germany.
I will never forget my first encounter with a German civilian. My roommate and I wanted to take a trolly downtown. Once we figured out that there were no free trollies, we traded our German curranc...Expand for more
y between us so that we could get exact change. An older German woman was opening her change purse and offering money to us so that we could ride the trolly. We tried to tell her that we had enough money between us for the fare. We learned shortly after this that you don't need exact change to ride public transportation in Germany.
My most memorable job that I had in the military has to be the First Sergeant's driver. I highly doubt he will ever let me live down what I did to him during one field exercise late at night (and I highly doubt he has forgotten it either). Let's just say it isn't a good thing to leave your first sergeant standing by the side of the rode. Fortunately for him, we were not in Grafenwhoer at the time this happened. After I went back and picked him up, I think we sat there for a good 10 minutes because we were laughing so hard.
I definately would have to say the best chief that I ever had has to be SSG Goodwin, or as we used to call him "Goody". Going to the field with him and Sgt. Robertson was like going to the field with Abbot and Costello. SSG Goodwin did expect a lot from both Sgt. Robertson and I, but he was also fair.
As I sit back and look at my time in the military, a few questions come to mind. If I could go back and do it again, the answer is yes I would. Am I glad that I did it, the answer is yes I am. Finally, would I go back now, the answer is no. Not because of what is going on in the world today, but because of the role of our military when I got out in 1995. I knew that I would not make a good peace keeper.
