Mark's Story
Senior communications researcher and lecturer with background in print journalism. I've designed post-secondary curricula and major national research projects in the areas of broadband videoconferencing and advanced communication infrastructure. I took my PhD (2004) in Knowledge Management and Complex Systems and am published at the top of this literature. Native Calgarian; attended Sunalta and Ernest Manning High School in K12.
As Director of the Centre for Information & Communication (University of Calgary) within the Van Horne Institute, I've led and/or am leading projects involving telework, broadband roll-out in the rural setting, and community engagement in the energy sector. I'm affiliated with the Center for Public Involvement in Edmonton, and have contributed to Dr. Edna Einsiedel's community engagement work on biodiversity. I also have research contacts/affiliations in Germany.
From May 2006 to December 2007 I was VP, Strategy & Communication for a media company in Calgary and was Editor-in-Chief of its flagship publication, Alberta Oil magazine -- a relatively new entrant into its field that my editorial team and I made over into a premiere oil & gas quarterly journal and online radio offering.
I graduated honours philosophy from McGill University before completing course work in the MA philosophy program at U of Alberta. In 1988 I joined Westerra Institute of Technology in Stony Plain, where I helped design and deliver Canada's first accredited post-secondary program in electronic publishing. Recruited by Shell Canada in 1991 to design and oversee a world-first corporate newspaper. My MA thesis on phenomenology and virtual reality was nominated for the Governor General's Gold Medal award â Canada's top honour at this level of scholarship.
I consult in the areas of community engagement, renewable energy, broadband implementation and soft systems analysis. I also sit as a director of a Calgary-based oil & gas company.
Dual citizen: Canada and Germany.
