Marla's Story

From Ronan to MSU in Bozeman to WVU in Morgantown, WV to NMU in Marquette, MI to UC in Cincinnati Ohio--my life has been mostly about education--getting my own degrees--BS (MSU), MS, and PHD (WVU)and then giving back as a professor (NMU and UC). In addition to teaching, I have been very involved in faculty governance having served as the Chair of the faculty, faculty representative to the Board of Trustees, at-large senator, and in several other college and university positions. One of my most major professional accomplishments is having developed UC's 'Office of Nationally Competitive Awards' designed to assist our top students in applying for and winning external national and international scholarships. I am still managing to get in some traveling and scuba diving. I have gone on 17 annual Christmas dive trips with the most recent being to the Red Sea and Egypt in 2016. I missed this past year as I was recovering from ankle surgery, but have a trip scheduled to Cuba in June. Best overall trip was to Galapagos, Ecuador and Peru in 2002. In Galapagos I encountered massive schools of hammerhead sharks, rays, and fish as well as penguins, sea iguanas and sea lions while diving. In Peru I enjoyed the beauty of the Andes in a wonderful train trip from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes, and then was awed by the mystery and intrigue of Machu Pichu. The whole trip was also book ended by stays in Quito where I enjoyed a heart palpitating roma...Expand for more
nce with a tall, dark, handsome Ecuadoran. The best diving of all of these experiences was probably in Palau in 2009. There was such a variety of types of diving, an unimaginable amount of hard coral, and tons of animals including lots of sharks (in mating season!) I have learned, however, that every dive locale offers something unique and memorable so, except for a couple of exceptions, I have not returned to places, but rather sought out new destinations. Some of the other wonderful places I have been are Coco's Island (Costa Rica), Wakatobi Indonesia, the Philippines, Belize, Turks & Caicos, Papau New Guinea, Sipidan, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands,...lots of tales to tell--of both diving and land adventures. I figure that I need to see as much of the world as I can, while I can--before my creaking joints interfere with my young-at-heart sense of adventure. Been spending summers in Montana at the family homestead and doing some contract photo journalism for one of the local newspapers. I also continue to develop my hobby of photography and am now what I would call 'semi-professional'--meaning I have sold some of my photographs, but not enough to make a living off of it! I have now resided in Cinti (actually Northern Kentucky) for 26 years--but my roots are still deep in Montana. There is just something about the beautiful Mission Mountains that holds my heart and of course, once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!
