Marlene's Story

Life It has been a very busy year. Jim, my husband , has been in the nursing home for more than a year now and for the most part has forgotten who I am. It has been very hard and maybe even worse on the kids to see their dad this way. I have had to clean the place up and it was quite a challenge. For the past few years Jim would not let me do much in the yard. It was part of his illness. He has Lewy-Body Dementia. It is a very horrible disease. We will be married 47 years this Nov. and it is very sad to think he won't even know it or me. I can't take him out anymore for safety reasons. I finally decided to start living again, advice from friends and family. I was having a very hard time as summer approached thinking about cleaning the place up. I live on a farm and have 19 acres to take care of. It had been let go for so long. In March I met Stan, someone I knew years ago and he offered to help. Well, God does send guardian angels. He has this place looking great. In fact, I have had people stop to tell me they are so glad to see we moved in and cleaned it up. I then have to tell them I have lived here over 20 years. It's funny to see their face then. He has helped with so much and given my life purpose. He took me to Starved Rock for my 65th birthday and we are leaving for the Dell's next week. In Oct. we are going to the Smokies and any where else he wants to go. Jim and I never traveled and I am enjoying it. I had to have my dog, Muffin, put to sleep in July. I'd had her thirteen years and she was all I had left here at home. I miss her so much but now I have the freedom to go. I got a John Deere riding lawn mower for the first time and I love mowing now. The more Stan and I cleaned the yard the more I had to mow. I have mowed over several bushes and flowers but I will get used to it. I sold my daughter and her husband 5 acres in the pasture. They are going to start building soon. It will be so nice having her close. My oldest son, Jim, had his book published this year. It was so exciting when I was at starved Rock in the gift shop and saw his book there. I am very proud of him. He was also made an Associate Research Scientist at the Illinois Natural History Survey. He is one of very few who has this title with just a high school education. My youngest son and his wife and daughter are doing great. Emma is now 2 1/2 years old and absolutely the joy of my life. I retired from the School Board after 12 years of service. I was very proud to have been given that long but I needed to moved on with my life. We remodeled, built on, built a new intermediate school and a beautiful sports complex while I was there. Our sports complex is one of the best in the state for our size school. I sing with a couple. We do southern gospel and are called The Harmony Trio. We sing somewhere almost every weekend. There is such peace in music. I have decided I can sit and feel sorry for myself for what has happened to Jim or I can get up and live. I chose the later. God has taken care of me so far and I chose to let him continue. Stan has made life worth living again and I thank God for that. Well, it's time to update. It's been two years since my husband went to the nursing home. He has gotten worse and it isn't any easier to see him like this. I am waiting for my new grandbaby to come in Sept. Emma is 3 1/2 now and oh so beautiful, of course. She's gramma's girl. Stan and I have done a lot of traveling. Went to Key West in Feb. WOW! We are still working my house. Old houses need lots of work but it is so nice to see it back in shape. I'm stil singing and loving it more and more. I've met so may WONDERFUL people and life is good. Well, my husband, Jim, passed away Oct. 17th. I was on my way, on a Sunday morning, with my friends to sing at a revival in Fraklin, Ill. and they called from the nursing home to let me know he was going to the hospital with pneumonia. He was there till Wed then went to Hospice. It was an answered prayer that his suffering is over. Emma's little s...Expand for more
ister was born Sept. 17th. Her name is Ellen Ivy. She was 9 lbs. 2 oz. and now is 12 lbs. Emma is in Preschool and loves it. I have been very busy with my singing and still working on the house. Did get away after the funeral for a while. Took a little trip through Shawnee National Forest from Bald Knob to Cave in Rock and almost everything in between. Beautiful country. Just a little update---I'm doing fine, getting ready for Christmas. It is coming fast and I'm getting slower, not a good combination. The grandkids are keeping me busy. Emma is in preschool and what with field trips and class activities we have fun. Baby Ellen, now 3 months, is getting so big and I might add, beautiful. Been singing all lot so practice, practice and practice. All this keeps me active. It will be different this year without Jim, but, we are all so relieved that he isn't sufferig anymore and for that we are thankful. My goodness, it's been a very busy year. The grandgirls are growing so fast. Emma, 4, will start school this week and Ellen will have her first birthday in Sept. I have been sooo busy this summer. Went on a trip out west for 2 weeks in June and it was beautiful. The rest of the time I have been working around the place and singing. My daughter and her husband finally got their house going, it is to be finished in Sept and I'm excited. They are building in my pasture and I can see it from my dining room window. No earthshaking news, just the usual but I'm doing fine. My oldest son was put on the Wall of Fame at the high school in June for his accomplishments in Butterfly Collecting. My goodness, you talk about proud, wow!!! July 21, 2014 Well, I haven't written anything in some time. my granddaughters are now 9 and 5. I am so proud of them. I am still busy singing and loving it. involved in many things at church and with the kids. have been to Christmas Mountain in Wisconsin, slid down the mountain in an inner tube and at the water park, well that was just plain fun....last Sept. went to Disney World with the kids....never thought I'd ever go there and certainly never thought I'd ride some of the crazy rides but I did. it was exciting.....life has been good and I'm still living on the farm. I changed my profile picture to this one. I sang in a HeeHaw gospel sing and it was so much fun and I dressed like this to be in it. Things are going very well right now, I spend most of my weekends singing at churches and other places. Didn't know life could be so much fun at this age. I got a dog in May, her name is Fiona and she is a BIG black lab. She is a big baby too and I love it. The granddaughters are growing so fast. This Oct 17th it will be 6 years since Jim passed away. May 17, 2016 It's been a while since I updated what's going on....been keeping very busy, I still enjoy gospel singing just about every weekend and if I'm not doing that it's something with the grand kids or church. My granddaughter Emma had a dog walk last year and raised $4000.00 to help Menard County Animal Control with the animals. She is planning another for this year on June 11...She works so hard doing this herself, sooo proud of her and the family for supporting her in what she does.....She was in the Musical Lion King earlier this year and played Young Nala and it was excellent. I got to help make costumes and I was truly amazed at the talent the kids and parents in makes everything....they broke attendance records every night with some nights over 500+.....Fiona, my Black Lab who is 106+ pounds and beautiful....she's been such a blessing in my life. My oldest son is making quite a name for himself in the world of butterflies and has written several books....Proud of all my kids and they sure take care of mom! I try to keep as busy as possible, I do like just sitting doing nothing. I walk slower and waddle some but I don't care.....I have been very blessing with good health and if walking slow and waddling is all I have to deal with I won't complain. I love FB and being able to keep in contact with friends from the past. life is good!
