Marlene's Story
I went to PS 35 on Field Street for elementary school. Mrs. Voss was the principal. As seventh graders we went to Monroe High. My first homeroom was on the third floor with Miss Carragher, I think. Sallye Rapp and I have been friends since first grade. Not too many people can say that. Except for terrible weather, we walked our two mile round trip journey to school and home. We still see each other.
I believe that we got a great education at Monroe. The variety of classes and the extra-curricular activities gave us quite a rounded education.
Being in the A-V group got me out of study halls which I hated. I helped in the Nurses' office quite abit, thinking that I would go into the nursing profession.
I followed Miss Murray (9th grade science teacher) to Monroe Community College when it was on Alexander between University and Main Street. If you remember WXXI shared space in the building, too. I changed majors at MCC and eventually transferred to SUC Brockport. Teaching skiing, swimming plus being a science lab tech helped me pay for some of school. One of my extra activities was being photography editor for Brockport's newspaper, The Stylus.
My love for overseas travel started when the Brockport Ski Club journeyed to Germany/Austria.
My first job was teaching in the City Schools at Madison High School. My second job and last teaching job was at Pembroke Central School, a small rural school ...Expand for more
in Genesee County until 1998. I taught health education mainly with some physical education sprinkled in, depending the school's schedule.
If I had not had a bicycle accident in 1998, I'd maybe be teaching, but definitely would be playing my violin in the Genesee Symphony Orchestra, the states' oldest community orchestra. I thank the music teachers at the elementary school and at Monroe. I really loved being in the orchestra and being "in the pit" for the musicals.
Since my traumatic brain injury, most everything consumes much more time and energy, even writing. I am not complaining, it is just a statement of fact. I am most happy to be alive. I do not take anything for granted.
Two years after my accident, some friends suggested that we rent a house in Florida for a month. Upon returning and viewing each others pictures, they all wanted copies of my photographs. Because of the trip, my daughter and close friends encouragement, I found some direction in my life again. My business has grown from just making note cards to taking events, various types of portraits, and digital restoration. People have me restore 'old', cracked, ripped and dirty/stained photographs; the pictures that just scanning cannot fix.
I have been an exhibitor at local festivals including the Memorial Art Gallery's, "Clothesline Show", coffee shops, LeRoy, etc.
In the photo section I put in some restorations that I have done.
