Marsha's Story
I decided on day one of Mrs. Bassett's French I class at East High that I would major in French. After moving to California in 1972, I signed up as a substitute teacher in all ten local high school districts. I worked also as a: legal secretary, typesetter, bartender, waitress, private tutor and temporary secretary for various firms over the next six years.
The most unusual thing I ever did? In 1975, I set out (alone) for Europe with a 3-month Eurailpass in my purse and no set itinerary. (I would not recommend a solo trip abroad to any young woman, although my own trip made me really strong and satisfied much of my longing for travel.) After traveling thirteen countries, I returned to California with a firm resolve to do whatever it took to find a teaching position. I added an English minor by attending San Jose State University for one year, and that worked! I finally signed a full-time teaching contract in 1978.

ck, fourteen years at Overfelt, and two years at Evergreen Valley. I ended my 27-year career as a French (and sometimes English!) teacher in 2005. What I loved best about teaching was exposing my students to the wonders of French cuisine, music, literature, art--and, of course, the beautiful language. I especially loved the daily challenge of creating activities (including many games!) that would make the learning fun.
I share my life now with a retired math teacher, Dennis Conway. We spend at least a week in Ixtapa, Mexico, every winter. We've been on two barge cruises in France since we retired, but we enjoy being at home so much that travel does not have the same allure that it once did. (We live on a golf course in a community with so many activities, it feels like a permanent vacation!)
I don't get to Iowa much since my mother passed in 2008; figure it's time for some of my family to visit the Conways in California!
I would love to hear from any of my old classmates or students.
