Martha's Story
Life
I have been married for 40 years, have 2 children (both girls) and 3 grandchildren (all living in Michigan). I am a registered nurse, currently working part-time in maternity. My husband retired after 30 years with AT&T and we moved in 1998 to his home town in western PA. We currently live in the mountains of Fayette County Pa, having moved here in Dec. of 2002. We had nothing but snow from the day we moved until March 30th. But it is beautiful here in the summer and there are lots of outdoor activities available, like white water rafting and hiking. I enjoy photography and quilting. I wish I could play more tennis and bridge, though. I always look forward to class reunions.
School
After graduation from GHS, I went to Baltimore to Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. My first experience in a big city. What an education I got! And not all from books, either. Had a lot of fun for three years. In 1975, I started working on my BSN. It only took me 8 more years. I got my degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
College
After high school, ...Expand for more
I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore. What a grand experience! I learned so much about life living in Baltimore. I didn't do too much studying, though. But Hopkins was a great learning center. I grew up fast and discovered a whole new world outside of North Carolina. I am glad that I was a part of one of the greatest medical institutions in this country, even for a little while.
Workplace
I have had many different jobs in nursing since graduation. I first worked at Johns Hopkins on Halsted 4 before I got married. Then on to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD where I worked med/surg and CCU. In 1975 I started working at Fernwood House Retirement and Nursing Center in Bethesda. I eventually became the Director of Nursing there and kept that position for 9 years. My first administrative job was Asst. DON in 1981 and I was mostly in administration from then until 1998. Now I am a staff nurse again and loving it. I was a good manager but I enjoy - especially now- just being a staff nurse. Would love to be a travel nurse and see the world.
