Martha's Story
I was one of five Duran kids that went to Holy Cross. I have great memories of the many friends I shared that time with. The teachers we had cared for us. I had Sister Joanne, Sister Mario, Sister John Burkman, Mrs. Hithe, Mrs. Fawcett, SIster Mary Claire, and Sister Patricia. Sister Julia was my first principal, followed by Sister Lillian Joseph and then Sister Patricia. I know that Mrs. Hithe died this year.
Following in my sisters' footsteps I also went to Bishop Conaty. It was during the tail-end and remnants of the 1960's so I think my education there wasn't as rigorous as it could have been. I had many friends and was very involved. It was a very interesting place.
My mom didn't want me to go away to college so I drove everyday for the next four years to Loyola Marymount. I spent some time studying in Paris. I received both my B.A....Expand for more
and M.Ed from LMU.
I have been in education since 1979. I have taught in Inglewood and Santa Monica-Malibu. I also taught for five years at UCLA in the graduate school. Most recently I was a principal and now after regaining my sanity I am teaching middle school. (and loving it.)
I have been married to Art Contreras (Mount Carmel '72) for over 30 years. We have two daughters, Ilyana a junior at NYU and Ariana, a sophomore at Univ. of San Francisco. We've had a cat named Cleo.
I continue to be involved in my church. Yes, I'm an old church lady. Thank God!
Update: Still married to Art, back t o teaching second grade, one daughter stayed and teaches high school in NYC , and my other daughter teaches Kindergarten in San Francisco. I now have a rescue cat named Zazie. I recently attended out BCMHS 40th Grad. Reunion. Danced and laughed all night!!!
