Martha's Story
Many of you may not remember me -- I attended the alternative school. This was back before "alternative" schools were considered to be a last ditch effort for at-risk kids. The theory was truly an alternative to traditional forms of education. I was actually a member of the Class of '79, but I graduated a year early.
Within 2 years of graduation, I was married and my daughter, Jessie, was born. Three years later, our family grew by one more when my son, Michael, was born.
Ever the non-traditional student, I completed my undergraduate degree in 2001 and just finished my masters in public administration. Not sure what's next...perhaps another graduate or post-grad degee.
Today my children are grown, wonderful and completely different adults! Jessie works in the healthcare field caring for altzheimer's patients in a care facility. She loves her job and is extremely dedicated to her patient population. Mike is a middle school computer sciences teacher. He is a very patient man, but readily admits he prefers his 8th graders over his 7th graders -- apparently the 7th graders a little squirrely! Fortunately they both still live in Iowa and are less than a 3 hour drive away (in different directions, though). We all...Expand for more
lead busy lives, so I don't get to see them or their beautiful families as often as I'd like, but we do see each other several times a year. I am extremely proud of them both; as different as they are, they each represent the best I have been able to share with the world.
I have been blessed with two gorgeous grandsons -- Tristan and Wyatt. They will each turn three this spring/summer, and they truly are the lights of my life
Fortunately, I can still pass for 35ish...who ever thought those words would come out of my mouth? Remember when the saying was, "Never trust anyone over the age of 30..."???
The man in the photo with me is Mark, my fiancee. He's wonderful and we will be married this fall. That photo is a couple years old; the only difference is my hair is a little grayer and Mark's is a little thinner.
Life has been good yet hard. For those of you from the Class of '73 who may remember my sister, Phyllis, well, if you hadn't heard, she passed away in 1999. My brothers, Tom ('71) and Bob ('66), are still around and I see they are registered on this website.
I've never made it to a class reunion and I think it would be an absolute gas to attend either '78 or '79. Hard to believe it's been 30 years!
