Martha's Story

I married in 1958. We had our three daughters. Moved to our forever dream home in 1973. I was never ever moving again. I found my dream job in 1976 as a travel consultant with AAA. In 1977 my husband was called to his dream job in St Louis with the U.S. Army where he was promoted to Lt. Colonel. This was to be a 30 day assignment that turned into 14 years. Never say never! After St Louis, We moved into 4 Staff post Road which was the former boyhood home of General Douglas MacArthur. What fun to be able to entertain in this house. It was a wonderful time for military wives also because we could have our careers and be a part of military life. With each move I could continue my path with AAA. Jim traveled almost every weekend to visit a unit someplace in the states. Through my job we used our vacations to travel to Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, South America. Antartica. We have now traveled to all the continents, all the states , most of Canada and the Caribbean and I have completed about 75 cruises our favorite form of travel. In 1983 Jim was called to be the Sr. Advisor to the Surgeon General of the Army on Reserve Affairs. He was promoted to full colonel. We lived in Fairfax, Va and I worked at AAA national headquarters. Dulles was a wonderful airport to fly to all parts of the world. We met and escorted many notable people you have read about in the news. (Celebrities , politicians, jockeys , presidents, horse owners, national coaches,, spots stars, Rock stars)We have dined with senators, representatives., Generals) We attended soirées we only thought we would dream about. In in the news. Two little nobody’s from small country towns who thought they would live in Louisville,Kentucky forever. And maybe go to Europe one time in their lifetime. At the end of the journey where to live? Our elderly parents were still in Kentucky. We felt the need to be close to their homes. Jim returned to Taylor Drugs as a pharmacist. I retired AAA in ...Expand for more
Potomac and came home to return to AAA Ky and retired in1998. We moved to Prospect and now live in Lexington. God blessed us with an extraordinary life. We trusted Him to be our guide and when He opened a door we walked through it and never looked back. Proverbs 3: 5-6 says Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not into thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. It worked for us. Our children thank us for broadening their horizons. That was our biggest concern. Every promotion came at a time when they would be changing schools. Sometimes it meant being apart from their father for a year. Happily after St Louis they were all in college. Two finished their education in Kentucky and the other stayed in Missouri. My husband and I reminisce often now about our school experiences. I graduated from Manley Jr. High and could have attended city or county high school. I am so pleased I selected Valley’. I thought we had an awesome class. My best friend was and still is Shirley Bogard Taliaferro. Motsie Clark Carrico has been an outstanding class president Along with some of our other officers. I enjoy having lunch no with the Valley Girls each month. We have had adventures, we never dreamed about taking place in our lifetimes. I was in Eastern Europe right after the fall of communism. Jim had to cancel because of preparation of hospitals for Desert Storm. We were almost arrested in Jamaica and Australia talked our way out of that. Jim flew with friends around rim of Mt. st Helen. I was charged by an elephant in Kenya. We were in Tanzania when the borders were reopened.. we both took flying lessons. Jim has been at the controls of the Goodyear blimp. We just happen to be at the right place at a good time. I have flown a helicopter, a Stearman, a 150 and 172.. I was robbed in NYC. we have finished our first bucket list and need to write a new one. We are looking forward to Valley’s 65 th reunion.
