Martha's Story

I was trained as a dancer in the area of Hula, Tahitian and Belly Dance. I also twirl regular batons, knives and fire batons. While in High School, I frequently made trips to Los Angeles, Ca. where I was on several television shows (remember the show "Groovy"?), including acting as a co-host in one commercial. I modeled in San Diego and Los Angeles, Ca. I entertained, as a dancer, every Friday night at the YMCA in downtown San Diego. I also went to the hospital at Camp Pendleton once a month to perform in shows entertaining the military serviceman who had returned to the states from the war in Vietnam. I was a contestant in numerous beauty contests in the San Diego area but my most memorable contest was when I became "Miss Santee" in 1968. I left California and moved to the state of Virginia in the summer of 1970. I met and dated Michael whom I eventually married in August 1971. I attended school for hair dressing and worked for Taylor Burgess (a prestigious hair salon in Norfolk, VA) until I gave birth to my daughter, Kimberly. Then I stopped working so that I could stay home and raise our daughter. In August of 1978, Michael and I decided to relocate to New York where Michael's home office was located. In March 1979, I gave birth to our son Michael. In January of 1982, I had a personal experience with Jesus and committed my life to God. I became a teacher at Faith Academy, in Farmingville, NY for 3 years. I was also instrumental in establishing a children's church for Village of Faith Church where Faith Academy was established. I worked as a youth leader for 18 years, teaching the word of God to children 4 to 12 years of age. I also became actively involved with "Victorious Overcomers" in 1996. This program helps to set people free from anything that holds them in bondage such as..... alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, co-dependency, unforgiveness, fear, worry, etc. After graduating the program in 1998, I was asked to continue with the program, working in a leadership position for 7 years.. In January of 1997, I had gone to several doctors for a series of testing concerning my health. The last doctor was a cancer specialist who wanted to rush me into surgery within the next 3 weeks of...Expand for more
my visit to him. I asked the doctor if I could pray about the operation first, before submitting to the surgery. He said that he would give me one-week to pray about it but that it was imperative that I call him back to make the appointment for the surgery. Upon leaving the doctor's office, I immediately began to pray asking God what I should do in this situation. I felt that God answered me and let me know that if I did have the operation, the cancer would always come back because the root of the problem, which was unforgiveness, had not been dealt with. I believed that if I obeyed God and forgave everyone who had hurt me, God would heal me and the cancer would not return to my body. The way that I came to this decision is based on Matthew 11:25, 26 "And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses". Obedience to God and His Word brings blessings. Disobedience causes our prayers to be hindered and stops the flow of God's blessings in our life. I chose not to have the operation but to forgive everyone who had hurt me. I ask God to forgive them as well. I applied Luke 6:27-36 in my life, which says; "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you...." Along with forgiving others, I ate the proper foods and took vitamins. It took 2 1/2 - 3 years but God's healing in me was finalized in August 2000. I have been cancer free by the healing power of God for 21 years now. In January of 2005, I stepped down from my positions of leadership at my church to pursue the writing of my book, "Unforgiveness, Cancer, and Healing". I am also in the process of writing a series of children's books about "Tithing" as well as, a Christian Arts and Crafts book for the ages of 6 to 12 years of age. I believe that God has called me into full time ministry and I am excited at the thought of everything that God has done, is doing and will continue to do in my life.
