Marti's Story

I live in the Los Angeles area, less than a mile from the beach. Earned my Ph.D. in higher education leadership at Claremont Graduate University and served as the Vice President of Academic Programs and Professional Licensure for the Laureate Higher Education Group, a global university community that serves about 500,000 students annually, until I was diagnosed in summer 2009 with a rate, incurable, and progressive disease. That disease is idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension, which has caused me to lose my stamina and become disabled. From my early 30s to my early 40s, I was the "star" of television's ROMPER ROOM children's program, where I was known as Miss Marti. Loved that period of my life! I should have paid them for the privilege, it was such a great experience. I later also served as the Founding Dean of the Teachers College at Western Governors University, a unique competency-based (not course-based) higher education institution developed by 19 governors in the western U.S. What a ride to help invent something brand new that never was in terms of interesting human learning opportunities! In addition, I wrote three books related to parenting and teaching and had them published along the way. One of my most difficult parenting trial...Expand for more
s was seeing my youngest son through cancer and a heart transplant. Starting as a high school senior, he had three episodes of Hodgkin's disease, acute lymphocytic leukemia, a shoulder and hip replacement, and in October 2006, a heart transplant. What more could go wrong?! Everything after the Hodgkin's disease came as a result of treatments for the Hodgkin's. But in April 2008, Kyle competed in the Olympic-length lavaman triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, and is now very fit and healthy. I'm married to Dr. Fred Garlett, whom I met my freshman year in college (shortly after leaving Arlington High). We have two sons, Marc and Kyle, who have both blessed us with beautiful daughters-in-law, Yan and Carrie, and in 2008 and 2009, we were so fortunate to be gifted with two grandchildren, courtesy of Marc and Yan, named Cade and Ella. Throughout my professional and personal life, I've traveled to 6 continents (only Antarctica is missing from my lifetime itinerary, something I still hope to rectify) and across 30 countries. In addition, I've visited all 50 states. I am very contented with the life Fred and I have made for ourselves. His companionship and friendship, and our shared history, mean the world to me. You'll notice that I have him with me in my photo.
