Martie's Story
Life
I am the mother of one son, Alex, who is a musician here in New York. My mom and brother Andy are still living in Michigan, but I moved to NYC in 1978 to attend Columbia University Graduate School. I really fell in love with the multicultural neighborhood of Greenwich Village where I lived (among other places) until 1987.
From 1989 to 2007 I was a teacher at Lawrence Woodmere Academy where I made many good friends and taught hundreds of terrific kids. I even met my "significant other" of 14 years at LWA. He was a guest speaker whom I invited to talk to my students about Constitutional Law as it applied to teenagers.
I started working at LWA in order to cover my son's private school education, but stayed because of the wonderful people there. Eventually, my son graduated and most of my close friends either retired or moved on. While it's still a fine institution, I resently felt like it might be time for me to try something new, too. This fall I am starting a new job with the He...Expand for more
wlett-Woodmere Public School district. I am in the process of finishing a post-Masters degree in Gifted Ed. That will give me three NY State certifications: Social Studies, Special Ed and Gifted Ed. As a teacher, I try to pattern myself after the many wonderful teachers who went the extra mile to help me when I was a student. I can name a few: Peter Voelz, Madame Thomas, Ms. Zappa, Sr. St.John, Mr. Briarcheck, Dr. Bowe, Dr. Cline, Dr. Chester Starr.
My newest hobby is photography. If you google Martie C Last, the link takes you to my on-line gallery of photos. Please check it out if you have the time. I am also trying to improve my Photoshop skills. While I have played the flute for many years, I recently took up the violin, too. I love opera and have tickets to see a few at the Meropolitan Opera in the 2007-2008 Season.
Although I am really bad about getting/staying in touch with people from my past, I would love to hear from anyone who has taken the time to find me here.
