Martin's Story

Hmm. Summary: Not that interesting, but I'm having a good time along the way. Born and reared in Dallas, but my parents' families are from Northern Mexico, so lots of childhood visits to visit relatives. As well, thankfully, the gift of speaking Spanish without having to study it. Catholic grade school and high school in Dallas, and then off to Princeton, NJ, for four years, a BA in Romance Languages (French Lit), and back home to Dallas. A technical writer from Day 1 of my "career," I have been with small and large firms for some good stretches. Nowadays, it's Cisco Systems in Richardson. (Layoff: Nov 2010, but the people who picked up the work hired me, so I still for *at* Cisco, even if they are no longer my employer.) Along the way, I picked up German, too, which I now sometimes wish I'd chosen for my degree instead. Oh yes, half-hearted starts toward an MBA at UD and SMU, but I did not finish those. More recently, Linguistics at UTA, but that's on hold (maybe forever). 2013: I finished the MA in TESOL in Dec 2012. Somewhere along the way, my hobby and passion became going to the opera. At first it was just domestic, and a weekend in New York (or elsewhere) was the highlight. In the mid 80s, a few long trips to Europe whetted my appetite ...Expand for more
even more, and that's the driving force behind deciding where to spend my free time these days. Because I can telecommute, I kept a place in Berlin since 2004 and spent half my time there, but I have just closed that down in July 2008 and am back in Dallas "to stay." (That exchange rate has not been my friend!) The opera thing has led to many friendships with people around the world, and that's perhaps its greatest reward. As a happy, healthy, single gay male and only child, my big responsibility has become taking care of my mother, with whom I share a home just around the corner from where I went to high school. We used to travel together and separately, but that's become impractical, so I plan to stay closer to home for the coming years. I left lots of my stuff with a good friend in Germany, so I will be returning often, in part to retrieve it. What else: I often choose to sleep very little (unhealthy), am currently losing the battle of the bulge (really must work on that), and am always planning the next trip. Politically, I lean left and Democratic, but the Germans remind me that both US parties are far more conservative than any of theirs. OK, that's a start. Look forward to reconnecting with long-lost classmates and coworkers. Martin
