Martin's Story

Life After college, I joined the Marine Corps to avoid the draft, never intending to make the military a career. However, I adapted well to the life style & moved up rapidly in rank. By my 10 year mark I was a Gunnery Sgt. when I was selected for commissioning to become an officer. During my 25 years in the Corps, I served all over the world, including Southeast Asia (Viet Nam), the Western Pacific, Nato Europe, North Africa & 3 tours of duty aboard Naval war ships at sea. Some of my duty assignments included that of a Avionics/Weapons Officer for a tactical gun squadron, a Training Officer at a Naval Avionics School, a Line of Duty Investigator (for the JAG), & a Courts Martial Officer, just to name a few. I have been to some great places & some not so great places, but I loved every moment of it & can't imagine my life's work going in any other direction. During my first tour I married my home town girlfriend. We stayed married for 20 years & had 3 wonderful sons. But life was tough for the families at home. I was assigned to the air element of a "first responce" amphibious brigade. We deployed to hot spots all over the world, never knowing when we would be called out or when we would return home. Almost half my career was spent seperated from my family. However, I feel I was blessed to be part of an organization steeped in history, tradition and comradery. Best of all, I had the chance to work for, work with, & command some of the finest men & women our nation has produced. Upon my retirement from the Corps, I traded my Marine uniform in for that of a Deputy Sheriff for Shelby Co., Tenn (Memphis). Following graduation from the Police Academy, I was assigned to the Patrol Division driving a district car around the county. After a year or so on patrol, I was transferred to the Fugitive Warrents Apprehension Unit. For the next 9 years I ran around the county chasing bad guys and dragging them off to jail. I worked with another deputy, my partner, who was also a former Marine and Nam Vet. We were like brothers & had a great time together. We were never seriously hurt & we never lost a prisoner. It was during this time that I met my current wife (the former finally had enough & said "goodbye" when I decided to become a cop). Jane, a true southern belle (Tennessee born, bred & educated) was a trauma nurse (RN) for the University of Tennessee-Memphis ER. She was also with the Emergency Services Unit of the Sheriff's Dept, which is how we met. Jane did such a good job patching me up when I got injured that I decided to marry the girl, so in 1997, I d...Expand for more
id. As time went on, the job was getting more dangerous (every arrest a fight) with the bad guys younger & faster, while I was getting older & slower. I knew where that would eventually end up, so I decided to leave the department while I was still healthy & fit. We left Memphis & moved to the country side of western Tennessee. Jane elected early retirement from UT-M. We moved to a small town north of Jackson, TN called Bells. I took a job as the Legal Administer for a mid size law firm in Jackson. It encompassed managing the firms day to day operations & personnel. I was with the firm for about 1 1/2 years when I followed Jane's lead & fully retired also. We bought a few acres west of Lexington, TN in a very small farming community called Huron (pop 50) in Henderson County. There we built a new house which we share with our many cats (2 mostly inside/the rest mostly outside). It was the perfect location. Close enough that shopping was within a 30 minute drive, yet far enough out that having a jeep 4x4 in the garage and a Winchester by the back door considered prudent. (Actually the Winchester is a bit antiquated, it has been replaced with a Bushmaster AR-15 A3M4 carbine). We now spend our time as retired folks with Jane doing her gardening, sewing & cooking, while I do my wood working & "yarding" (mowing, edging & etc & etc). We both enjoy defensive shooting, hunting, fishing, off-roading in our Jeep 4X4 & traveling. We love to travel. Our kids are grown, married with families of their own & very successful in their chosen careers (none of which is in the military...). Tragically and sadly, my perfect world came to an end August of 09 when my beautiful wife Jane passed away after a 2 month illness. Needless to say, I was devastated and a bit lost. Hopefully, I will find my way and get back on track. Time will tell... I ask all to please keep my Janey in their prayers. UPDATE 2010: I do believe things are starting to move in the right direction. My first wife Lynn, has relocated from Florida to Huron. She has been a great help in assisting me getting my life back on track. House cleaning, cooking (I can barely cook water), getting back with doctor visits, meds & stuff like that. Maybe most important is the fact that she has been very understanding and patient with me (no easy job), and has been there when I needed someone. All in all, life is looking a bit brighter these days. UPDATE 2011: More sad news. My partner on the Sheriff's Dept. & fellow Marine, Raymond Winkler, passed away this April. Ray was 65.
