Martina's Story
Fast Forward!
Today is Sunday March 30, 2014. Now 63 years years old! Unbelieveable! But I'm blessed with decent health and still get very excited about new projects. As I contemplate retirement I thought what will I do with all that I have learned over the years..so I decided to create a Health and fittness blog. A site where everyday working people get get good simple health information and start using it! Check it Out.. Just google doccallum.
I have also published a small recipe book of low carbohydrate (sugar) meals availabe on Amazon. "Dr. Callum's Healthy Low Carb Recipes"

Update
Greetings folks and thanks to all those who took the time to read my profile...I must admit it's time for an update...The last entry was about 5 years ago..yipes! Time flies...life is very good...I'm settled back in Baltimore...I purchased a 100+ year old abandoned Victorian house 4 years ago...the renovation is about 75% complete and I'm loving the space...10 rooms with plenty of walls to hang the art I have been collecting over the last 30 years...I am no longer doing office practice...I changed gears and am only doing Emergency Medicine..that's right I put myself directly on the firing line! LOL! The best part is I have a full-time work schedule that balances out to my only working 26 weeks a year..so that leaves plenty of time for socializing and travel. MY plan for travel for next year is to take time off at least once every 3 months and I think I'll start it off with lying on the beach in St. Martin.
I am so pleased to be a native Baltimorean...some of my friends say I should work for the Chamber of Commerce..after a 30 year absence I'm blown away with the number of very interesting and exciting things one can now do in B-More..and reconnecting with old friends is very special..
I am now on the board fo trustee for two Maryland non-profits...Baltimore Clayworks in Mount Washington...we just had a fabulous gala at the Engineer's Club here in Baltimore...the other is the Sotterley Foundation in St. Mary's County Maryland...last week we had our 8th annual Winefest and it was hugh sucess
Sorry if I'm rambling (lol)...to all those who missed Byron Pitt's booksigning at Enoch Pratt last week..shame on you..his book Step Out on Nothing is autobiographical and he is quite a story teller....Bryon Pitts is a native of Baltimore...East Baltimore :) is a CBS 60 minutes correspondent..well I'll keep it short for now....but stay in touch!
..Life
Mmmm..my life's bio..where should I start..well the basic info..the "stuff" people always ask first is include in the profiles..but I do admit there really isn't room for a narrative..when I left Baltimore in 1972 I moved to DC to complete my education..returned home for a year then went to Detroit for a year..returned back to DC for 9 years..left there in 1991 and moved to Las Vegas NV..there I praticed medicine full-time private practice...delivered over 400 babies and bascially worked like a "DOG!" or some crazy person..left there in Dec. 2000 went to work on an Indian reservation in Eagle Butte,SD for six months...returned to DC in June 2001 stayed there until Jan 2003..went back to Baltimore until Now..July,2003..doing a temporary assignment for a VA clinic in Salisbury, Md...maybe I'll get lucky and some man will kidnap me! LOL! In between all that moving around I traveled to England, Spain,Mexico, Bermuda, the...Expand for more
Carribean and a zillion places right here in the US. When I should clean up my abode I write health articles for African American publications and pretending I'm some big time freelance journalist! All jokes aside I'd really like to do that full-time..but nobody has offered me enough money yet! So I have to keep practicing medicine..my specialty is Family Practice with Obstetrics...I'll probably never stop working...I can't imagine not working...last but not least..the now photo is less than a year old..the then photo I took last month...see how exciting my life is..I waste time playing with my web cam!and Why don't you guys post a bio and photo! Everybody has a webcam now.
School
I think this school bio is to include everything before college..my best experience was the opportunity to be one of the original group of kids selected to participate in the first Upward Bound Program in Baltimore and the state of Maryland in the summer of 1966. I meet, became aquainted with and made friends with some of the most ambitous kids anybody could ever meet..the best part was we were absolutely clueless about how econically disadvantaged (poor!)we really were. But that didn't deter us from thinking we could do it all...I've participated in the planning in my class reunions at 10,20,25,30 and now 35th high school reunions but nothing would give me more joy than to see some if not most of the folks from Upward Bound.
College
College...my mother often said I was on a Roman Holiday while in college...what she was referring to was my partying...I couldn't help myself...I'm a weak woman..when my friends said there would be a party Friday night at the Beacon Hill Apts I tried to be there so they wouldn't miss me! My motto...was "Work Hard and Play Hard"..now that I'm 50+ I had to modify that..I just can't go directly to work from a party anymore...I get sleepy!
Workplace
I have worked in most settings in Pharmacy before medical school..the hospital pharmacy, the retail setting and the research setting...and I must say there is something about all of it that I still miss..but the opportunity to go to med school came along..I wasn't like some people with that burning childhood ambition to be a doctor..the opportunity presented itself (well almost..I did have to do my fair share to pursue it )..When I look at the personal sacrifices I'm not sure I would do it again..that's the price you pay when you don't believe it's your calling in life..I'm still trying to define mine and in the process I also find myself searching or attempting to reach a higher level of spirituality..UGH! HOW DID I GET OFF TRACK...This is supposed to be about my work career...don't get me wrong I do find enjoyment in my work..but it was a process..I had to redefine how I would practice my art to get enjoyment...and for those of you reading this who might be curious as to how I worked thru this process..email me and I'll share the experience...which is still ongoing.
Military
I joined the United States Public Health Service as staff Pharmacist at the clinical center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda,Maryland. I was the first Afro-American female commissioned officer assigned there.
During my tour I was accepted to the George Washington University School of Medicine...I became inactive reserve to attend Medical school in 1975. I finally resigned my commission in December, 1990.
