Martin "Marty"'s Story
Life
I kicked around Albuquerque for a year or so and then adventured through a career with the Marine Corps. 42 years later (where does the time go?), I am retired and disabled.. How does that happen? The year 2020 finds me happily married to the love of my life, still busy discovering each other and the wonders of raising the last of our six children, and now 4 grandchildren! I miss good mexican food terribly, We are retired to South Carolina and the beach.
I have been fortunate enough to stay in contact with many friends, wonder about others. I left some good memories in Albuquerque, gone but not forgotten. My hat is off to two of my dearest friends who are no longer with us, Robin Gonzales and Leo Bynon, you were blessed to be a blessing. I miss you both.
School
Jim Hulsman, Leah Ready, and Alan Geuder inspired me then and inspire me today.
If I could do it all over again I would get my head out of my backside earlier in life. But no, I wouldn't go back and change those days, it would mean having to do it all again.
thot i was in love a couple of times before with the girl next door, but that was long before i metcha, now i know that i can't forgetcha...am thrilled to be in love today with the girl of my dreams.
College
Attended University of Maryland University College Asian Campus for a brief period.
Still in the process of earning my degree from the school of life in general studies.
Workplace
My work since AHS has covered quite a bit of ground. I have done ...Expand for more
work in a nursery, a clothing manufacturer, a car wash, an auto parts store, as a basketball referee, a softball umpire, and as a vacuum cleaner salesman. Most of my time in the Corps was spent in a classroom. I was a radar technician for 14 years. My last six years in uniform were spent learning and "perfecting" a new trade and it got me my first "post-Corps" job, working as a civil servant teaching and facilitating improvement teams. I left Fannie Mae (a job I held as a corporate trainer) 3 years ago and have joined the USDA in the same capacity.
I love my job, but more than that, am very happy in life. I am married to an incredible woman, the love of my life and my best friend. My children are all healthy and happy. What more could I ask?
Military
Who would have ever thought I'd join the Marine Corps? After getting broken one too many times on a basketball court the scholarships completely dried up and it was off to San Diego for me. The Corps was something I actually enjoyed. I got some first class training, loved my job, got to meet some pretty good people, and made a career of it. Looking back on my 20 years I have no regrets and many happy memories.
And the upside today? They pay me not to come to work anymore! What a deal!
Currently
I am waiting for a decision on my retirement. All those years of playing basketball, rugby, and doing Marine Corps stuff have worn my body down and I am ready to retire. But surely not fade into the sunset, not yet at least...
