Marvin's Story
Graduated from Purdue in1972 with degree in teaching - PE major and Chemistry minor. Married Connie King in 1972 (graduate of Ball State with major in PE, minor in English). Taught at Morristown High School 2 years (lived in Morristown). Moved back to DeMotte in 1975 and began teaching at Christian Haven Home for Boys in Wheatfield, IN. Left teaching in 1977 and took a job as a Chemical Technician for NIPSCO, starting at the Bailley Generating Station in Chesterton, IN, then transferring to Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield. Took a job as a Chemical Supervisor in 1981. Moved into computers in 1989 and worked as a Automation Analyst for NIPSCO, working in their Merrillville Corporate Center... later moving to the Hammond location. NIPSCO outsourced their IT department in 1996, at which time I was offered a job by IBM, doing the same thing I did for NIPSCO. The 10 year outsourcing contract was cancelled after 5 years, so I ended up taking a job for IBM...Expand for more
in Raleigh, NC, as a Lotus Notes developer. Three years after moving to Raleigh, IBM began a work-from-home program, and I began working from home until I retired in 2014. Connie and I moved back to Indiana in 2011 to be closer to our granddaughter (Indianapolis). We currently live in a small town called "Cunot" (Poland address) and have been renovating an old home and making improvements to the 28 acre property. Our home is 2 miles from the boat ramp for Lieber Reservior (Cataract Lake/Cagle Mills Lake). We enjoy boating during the summer. I volunteer at our church, Soul Harvest Church, in Cloverdale working with the video ministry and other tech teams there.
Connie taught English at KV for 18 years, then at East Wake High School in NC for 10 years. She retired from teaching in 2012. Our daughter Melissa (Purdue: Communications & Psychology), married Herb Burnell (Purdue: Engineering ) in 2004 and we had our first and only grandchild, Addison, in 2009.
